Richard had attempted to bring the Bennetts to Justice for several alleged crimes, One of the charges against J, R, Bennett, who is chairman of the board of commissioners cf Bradford county, was peonage, being accused of holding a young girl in custody against her will. Bennett shot at Richard, who aaved himself by falling to the ground and afterwards shot at Bennett three times, who took refugo behind the counter of his store. Richard is a man of prominent family.
