CHARLOTTE NEWS, JANUARY 8. 904 . ft ASSASSINATED IN HOME his own (Correspondence the News.) Columbia, Jan. 8. In the Belleview section of Greenville county, Tues day night, Paul Brown, colored, was assassinated while sitting at his fire side. The shot was fired through a window, the load passing through the back of the chair in which Brown was seated and thence through his body, causing instant death. The ne gro fell forward, into the fire and was badly burned before he was taken out. The wife and children of Andrew McKenzie occupied the house in which the shooting occurred, and they were picking cotton from the bolls when the fatal shot was fired. McKen zie left home last spring because he was jealous of Paul Brown, who took his place in the house soon after wards and has remained there ever since. Suspicion rests on McKenzie, al though he has not been seen in the neighborhood since his departure last spring. At Winnsboro last night fire de stroyed the residence of Mrs. U. G. DesPortes, together with its con tents. The first intimation the sleep ing occupants of the house had of the fire was that the firemen burst through the ceiling of the rooms in which they were sleeping. The loss is estimated at between $7,000 and $8,000, with $4,500 insurance. Not since the establishment of the dispensary law in 1893 have dispen sary constables been so active in the enforcement of the law as they are at present. Each day the illicit sale of whiskey is curtailed and each day the "blind tigers" are decreased in num ber. Old and hitherto prosperous vio lators of the law have been driven fiom pillar to post and finally out of business. As an evidence of the per sistence with which the constables are pursuing the "tiger" keepers, four alleged "joints" located within an area of four square blocks were each visited 26 times in a single night. A new but effective system of raid ing has been inaugurated by the dis pensary officials. At each of the more notorious places where liquor has been sold openly by the drink, two constables have been stationed who keep a constant watch day and night, while the lesser violators are visited at intervals of half an hour. In their efforts to evade the officers the "tigers" have resorted to some of the most unique measures. Their hiding places have ranged from sew ing machines to cottage organs. On Saturday night last two con stables came into headquarters bring ing with them a Singer sewing ma chine. The machine was of the new model having a drop-head affair, with a box large enough to hold a crate of beer. On examination this box was found to be full of small bottles of whiskey. As the officers moved away from the place at which it was found, carrying the machine with them, the woman to whom it is said to belong fell backward in a faint. A few days ago constables visited a lunch room near the union station and after making a thorough search for contraband liquor were about to depart, when they acicdentally no ticed an innocent looking organ in one corner of the establishment. Knowing the cunning of the profes sional "tiger" the officers decided to take a look into the musical instru ment and were richly rewarded, find ing it filled with beer and whiskey. The organ, valued at $150, together with its contents was confiscated. The depository at which the fix tures and other articles seized are stored, is indeed an object of curios ity. The walls are adorned with mir rors, while around the edges are placed refrigerators, sewing ma chines, cottage organs and various other articles. Suit for $40,000. Mr. J. R. McCrary, administrator of the estate of D. S. Davis, the engineer who was killed in the wreck near Lex ington last April, has entered suit against the Southern for $40,000 as damages for the death of Mr Davis. The death of engineer Davis was caused by an accident to No. 97, the Southern's fast mail train, near Lex ington. Messrs. McCrary and Ruark, of Lexington, are the attorneys for the Davis estate. BRUTALLY TORTURED. A case came to light that for per sistent and unmerciful torture has perhaps never been equaled. Joe Golobick, of Colusa, Calif, writes: "For 15 years I endured insufferable pain from Rheumatism and nothing relieved me though I tried everything known. I came across Electric Bit ters and it's the greatest medicine on earth for that trouble. A few bottles of it completely relieved and cured me." Just as good for Liver and Kid ney troubles and general debility. Only 50c. Satisfaction guaranteed by Burwell & Dunn Co., Druggists.
