FIRE IN 6lL MILL. Negro Man Takes a Few Cuts in Pre ference to Being Burned to Death. Last night at about half past six o'clock fire broke out in the Oliver Oil Mill. The negroes in the room where the fire started broke and ran and every one succeeded in getting safely cut except Tom Miller, who in some way got left behind. Tom is a big negro, but his size did not help him against the fire, for before he could reach the door his face was badly burned and when he did reach it he found it locked. Then his weight came into good use. The window was half wood and half-glass. Tom seemed to prefer the glass part, which was the upper part, and with a dive he went clean through and landed a good ways over on the other side, lighting upon his head. This last was a small mat ter, so, picking himself up, he went to Mr. C. W. Simms in the laboratory, who acted as a doctor and bandaged his cuts and burns. The fire did very little other damage, only "sweepin up de flo' " as Tom expressed it. Optimistic Still. (By Associated Press.) London. Jan. 15. A - dispatch to Renter's Telegram Agency from St. Petersburg says: "Russian govern ment circles and Japanese legations are both optimistic, while among press and public are strong hopes that the crisis will have a peaceful issue. The Japan, ese legation reiterated today that the Tokio government is pacific and denied that the sentiments of the Japanese nation are bellicose. The Novoste observes Premier Bal four's spech at Manchester recently and the trend of the British public opinion would not be very reassuring, as they are not of a character to inspire pes simism. The Japanese government has taken Nikko Maru and Kasago Maru, two new fast steamers of the Nippon Line, for use as dispatch bessels.
