CHARLOTTE NEWS FEBRUARY 11, 104 8 CARNEGIE AIID MILES BUT LAMAf AIKEN The Great Philanthropist and the Distinguished Jailer in a Combination With Capi talist for the Purchase of S. C. Dirt. (Correspondence The News) Columbia, S. C, Feb. 10. Among the first guests to register at the Hotel Fark in the Pines, the new tourist hotel at Aiken which was opened on Monday last, were Capt. John McLeod Murphy, Mr. A. C. Zacharias and Mr. Mosser, 'capitalists of Harrisburg, Pa. These gentlemen at once sought Mr. F R. Henderson of the People's Bank, one of the owners of valuable kaolin land situated within two miles of Aiken and closed a deal for the purchase of S50 acres of this land, the considera tiong being $3,0,000. Associated with these gentlemen are Andrew Carnegie, Nelson A. Miles, of Washington, D. C, and A. A. Pope of Hartford. Conn. From the rich kaoline deposits in these lands, it is proposed to manu facture aluminum and chinaware. After the negotiations had been com pleted Capt. Murphy expressed great satisfaction at the prospects and said that thev had the best property in the world. Experts who several months ago examined the property, he said, had reported that the clay contains 70 per cent, of aluminum. He further stated that the analysis showed 16 per cent, more alumnium than the best mine in the world, which is not in America, His company owns, he continued, the cheapest and quickest process known for making aluminum. By this process the metal can be made in four hours where it now takes six days, thus de creasing the cost of production from forty cents a pound to twelve and a half cents. After completing the negotiations the party left for the north to confer with their association, but will return the latter part of the week accompa nied by Gea. Miles and Colonel Pope. Six hundred men will be put to work as soon as practicable. Only the most skilled and high priced labor will be employed, for whose accommoda tion a model town will be built. Not only will aluminum be made, tut factories will be erected for the manufacture of aluminum products' of many kinds. Carrying Live Stock in a Pullman. Yesterday evening at the Southern's depot a very pretty young lady got off of one of the vestibules carrying a very good -looking valise, though it seemed a little bulky for her to han dle. A gallant young transfer man seeing her put- the bag upon the ground stepped up and offered the ser vices of his company in the usual terms. 'j "Just in a minute," she said, and stooped over and began undoing the fastenings of her bag. This seemed a little out of the ordinary, but the young man, nothing daunted, began helping her. " Suddenly she threw the satchel wide open and to the surprise of the on lookers, out jumped a pretty little dog. The boy gasped, and said in an awed voice: "Don't he smother?'' The lady smiled, and explained, "Those horrid conductors won't let my Tootsie-woot-sie' ride with his smeetheart (here she embraced him)' so I just cut a hole in the end of the satchel and carry him in that." And the boy picked up the empty satchel, gaping wide open, not the satchel only, but the boy. f Buffaloes and Panthers.
