CHARLOTTE NEWS FEBRUARY 12, 1904 8 ! I lit t ! 1 : VI 11 t ! : i .V .4 i ' ' P j J I. . .' i i I ! i , if i ! ! !' S I' ii J i.1 I ( ,'.1 III ' 5 f! 1 : ,? A t j I 1 ft ii k i I PARKER FOR PRESIDENT. His Boom Got a Notable Boost in Manhattan. The Parker boom got a boost last night at the dinner given-by the' Man hattan Club for John Hone, it Vice President. Chief Judge Parker sat on the left of Justice Truax, who pre sided, while the guest of honor sat on the right. At the first mention of Judge Par ker's name, which was made by Jus tice Truax, there was a great cheer by the Club members. Then Forbes J. Hennessey said: "Three cheers for the next Presi dent of the United States.' The proposition was responded to with great enthusiasm, the club mem bers jumping to their feet and send in" up cheer after cheer.- So it was that Judge Parker was formally nom inated for the Presidency in his own .State. ' The last speaker was Senator P. H. McCarren, of Brooklyn. He said: "It has been said here tonight that the Manhattan Club is the leading club of the United States. I believe that is true, and being true I am glad to see that the leading Democratic club of the United States has nomin ated for the Presidency so sterling and so inspiring a Demorat as Judge Parker. I want to second his nom ination. 4 "He is conservative, dignified, ju dicial, one of the strong and trium phant young Democracy, allied with no faction and having no enemies to punish. (Great applause.) "He measures up to' the standard which all thinking Democrats require in their candidate to the Presidency. His back is toward dead issues, and his face toward a living and trium phant future. Such is the man upon whom all Democrats can unite, and who will surely lead the party to vic tory." Just before Senator McCarren spoke, and after a speech by ex-Secretary of the Treasury Carlisle, in which Mr. Carlisle said the Democra cy had every chance of winning the next election, but could not win un less it made up its mind that certain issues had been buried and buried forever, Judge Parker .was called on for a speech. He was greeted with more cheers, and made a five-minute speech, in which he felicitously referred to the great services Mr. Hone had render ed to the club. A letter of regret from Grover Cleveland was read by Justice Truax. and it was received with almost as much cheering as was the, nomination of Judge Parker. New York Sun. What is Sky Blue? (T. J. J. See, in the Atlantic.) ' The .blue color of the sky on a bright, clear, day has been constantly noticed by the individual from child hood. To the primitive lay mind the azure tint of he firmament is simply its natural color. Bu.t our daily ex perience shows that the visible dome of the heavens is only appearance, and science teaches us to inquire critically into the nature of things. The cause of this color viewed from a scientific standpoint has been almost as illusive as the fabled philosopher's stone, which during the Middle ages was for centuries an object -of . profound re search. The same may be said of the familiar color of the deep-blue sea, which has elicited the admiration of dwellers on the ocean shores from the earliest ages of mankind; (and yet probably no great , number of indi viduals haVe inquired into the cause of this color. The 1900 .census gives the number of wasre workers in the United States as 29,285,022, divided as folohvs: Professional 1,264,737 Trade and transportation, . . . 477s233 Domesticand personal service 5,691,746 Manufacturing and mechan ical pursuits . . . . . . . . . . 7,112,987 Agricultural pursuits . . .... lo'.43s!919 The number of millionaires is eiven at 3,340.
