The court's time Monday and Satur j day was principally consumed in the "Ilus oi "ie case against Wiley Elack, for alleged violation of the liquor laws. The case was one of con siderable importance and, interest, and was a hard fought legal bnrtlp Tha fendant was represented, by Col. V T J Lusk, Thomas !S. Mr. Black operated a large distillery in this city, which Was closed and the liquors confiscated last fall because of alleged irregularities. The case against him having failed, and it is today stated that he intends bringing suit against Collector of Reve nue H:.;S,;.-Harkins and his bondsman, the amount of damages to be asked not being invulged. - Many important indictments were previously returned "against steam dis tillers operating in widely separated counties, Rowan, Yadkin, Wilkes, Transylvania, Clay, Jackson and far Cherokee. , Aside from the Blackburn affair there was very little of. the sensational about the term of court just concluded. The mills of justice ran swiftly and smoothly the court having the accu mulated work of almost a year before it and lawi; was dispensed by the wholesale.- rr " . ,' .. . There is never a term of Federal Court in this city though that does not furnish something-of amusement and interest to an observant spectator. The court room is almost always filled with a throng of witnesses, defendants and onlookers drawn from the western sec tions of the State from Wilkes, Madi son, Yancey, Jackson, Clay and Chero kee, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania men whom it is interesting to observe, and who never fail to furnish some thing out of the ordinary. Blockader and witness and revenue '"swapping lies," borrowing chewing tobacco, all in the best of humor with never a hint that one is the hare .and the other the hound one the pursuer and the other the pursued. .This is all side play though, and talk they never so friendly today, tomorrow they will again be at their ;ame of hide and seek. Among those gathered at the court were a number of Indians, and two copper colored members of the tribe of Cherokee, Alvin and Burt Sawyer, came to grief in a ludicrous manner Monday afternoon. They desired to re turn to their homes in Marion and made their way to the station with that intention. But unfortunately they had imbibed too much pale-face fire water, and they made the fatal mistake of boarding the Toxaway train. When they were well out of Asheville, they were informed of the error of their but get off at BiltmoreT When they reached that station Alvin was unloaded but Burt was nowhere to be found. Later however, he appeared on the scene considerably worse for wear, he hav ing fallen off the train into a muuhojie somewhere he didn't know just where. The couple then began the walk back to the city, but shortly engaged in a free for all fight and were taken in charge by a policeman who carried them to the citxvfbcJflytp to cool off. Tuesday they' werirgiven a trial in police court. Five flasks of whiskey and a pistol had been taken from them, and one was fined $1 and costs for being drunk and disorderly, and the other $15 for carrying a concealed weapon ; . ARLINGTON! NEWS.
