12 THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, APRIL t 1 , 1 906. GRADUATING EXERCISES. Final Arrangements Made For Closing of Graded School. The final arrangements providing speakers for the graduating exercises of the Charlotte graded schools have been completed by Superintendent Alexander Graham, who announces that the literary address will be deliv ered by Prof. M. C. S. Noble, and the baccalaureate sermon will be preached by Rev. Plato Durham, pastor of Trin ity Methodist church.- The baccalaureate sermon will be delivered on the evening of Sunday, May 13, and on the Friday following, May 18, the literary address will be delivered by Prof. Noble. The closing of the city schools is just five weeks from Friday of this week, and the school children are al ready looking forward with more than ordinary interest to this event. There are two monthly examinations yet, one next week, and the last one of the year during the week of May 14-19. The graduating class at present numbers 31 pupils, which As one of the largest that the city schools have turned out in several years. An interesting fact in reference to the number of members of the gradu ating class was told a reporter by Su perintendent Graham this afternoon, when he stated that Atlanta, Ga., a few years ago with a population, of SO.OOO graduated from her public schools a class of just this number, indicating that Charlotte's well managed and up-to-date schools graduate a much larger per centage of pupils who enroll for the ten years course of study than does Atlanta. Prof. Nobles, is recognized as one of the strongest men in faculty of the State University, and is a scholar whose name is familiar to hundreds of former students and to leading men over the state and the south. His sub ject will be "The Schools of London and Scotland." and those who know Prof. Noble best, know that his address will be a scholarly effort. Rev. Plato Durham, who has been selected by a vote of the class to de liver the baccalaureate sermon on the Sunday preceding the graduating exer cises on Friday, is already recognized as a friend of the young people, and his sermon on the occasion mentioned will prove a great help to the young men and women who compose the graduating class. The tenth grade, constituting the graduating class, under the tutelage of Prof. Harding, has accomplished ex cellent work this year, and the mem bers cf the class are anticipating with more than ordinary pleasure and eagerness the approaching commence ment exercises. The announcements about time and place for the holding of the various public gatherings in connection with the graduating exercises will be made later.
