THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, AUGUST 18, 1906. i o TODAY'S I ..MARKETS I COTTON TIMES DEMOCRAT. i Furnished bv, -the jGouofi Exchange and Board'oT radJeS HJ New Orleans, Aug. 18. Evidencing an utter lack of reverence-jfor the dead bt .irs and prof ecsional pessimists gent-rally, mutilated the c6rpae whenever t lie spirit moved them, with the result i h.it the cotton market closed at the bottom and about a dollar a bale under Thursday's final figures. A reduction ct a quarter of a cent a pound in the j, rice of spot cotton relieved some of tho tension, but had it not been for the development of an encouraging de iij.ind for September,-October commit ments from abroad the final gong might have left the talent, rank and iile, very neany as bearish as ever. The outlook for the immediate future is not encouraging and unless foreign ii?niand shall quickly become a po fenr factor, a weak and sinking mark et alone can be looked for. From today's Texas weather there are scattering ieports of damage from too much rain, and from weevils and boll v:orms. That such conditions should pre vail at a time when severe deteriora tion usually takes place has robbed the market of any support and made it a punching bag for the bears. Each day seems to make the shorts roore confident and the position of the bulls more hopeless, and the mar- 1 -ct ceems to have lost all ' rallying rowor. V.'hile we can see nothing in sight to change the complexion of the out look, the very fact that the market is so one sided makes it a dangerous proposition to remain short of it. Foreigners are selling more freely abroad, and the whole world can see eo good in cotton. The end of the decline seems to be no where in sight, and while we Think it more a question of nerve than margins to buy at this low level, ve cannot yet advise purchasers ex cept to secure short profits. Colorado Springs, Aug. 17. An agreement entered into between two women whereby they promise "to love. nonor and cherish until death did them part" figures in a suit begun in the District Court to recover property which one of the women Nellie B. Hewitt, is. alleged to have turned over to the other, Columbia Anna Robbins, on the belief that the covenant they entered into would never be broken. But a man came between them. Mrs. Robbins, whose name was Zim merman at the time the agreement was drawn up, married, and according to Mrs. Hewitt retained ' the property which they had held jointly, and which is valued at about $5,000. The nove. nuptial agreement which was included in the original complaint filed reads as follows: "We do hereby solemnly covenant agree each with the other to take each other for better or worse, to love, hon or and cherish, through joy or sorrow or woe, until death does us part, God being our witness, for in Him we trust." The agreement as set forth was en tered into and duly signed by the wo men May 8, 1892. and their haPDv home was broken up about six months ago by the marriage of Mrs. Robbins to a mere man. Mrs. Hewitt professes to have been the original owner of most of the joint property and wants it back. Efforts to locate the fugative - clergyman , have thus far failed, though he is believed by his congregation to be with his wife and child in New York The money which Mr. Culley is ac cused of embazzeling was raised by Mrs. John Beveridge, one of his con gregation, who mortaged her home and intrusted the $1,800 to the pastor.
