THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, AUGUST 23, 1 906. 8 WHIPPED BY WHITECAPPERS. . Hoosier Had Attacked Preacher Who Had Ridiculed Father's Theology. Nashville, Ind., Apg. 23. At a late hour last night George Wooten, well known throughout Brown county, was whipped by a gang of whitecappers heransfi ho. defended his father's re ligious belief at a gospel meeting by taking the minister by tne throat and soundly boxing his ears. Wooten has hut one leg, and he is commonly known as "Peg-leg." He is somewhat recklessly inclined; and un til this attack feared no man, big or little. "Peg-leg" was staying with his brother, William Wooten, in Johnson township, and he has this to say of his experiences with the whitecappers: "I was at pentecost meeting at Crooked Creek schoolhouse. The preacher was a young man named Clyde Springer, and when I heard him say in his sermon that there was no body in helf but New Lights and hump-backed Campbellites, I got hot and took him by the neck and gave him a cuffing. My father was a Camp bellite, and I could not sit by and hear any preacher say such stuff. I believe the whitecaps whipped me fer cuffing the preacher." MRS. BROWN LOCKED UP. FOR SALlOB , RbNL. Mrs. Brown, who has figured as the friend and liv ing companion of the "young widow,' Mrs. Hamilton, in the house at 323 West Eighty-second street, jumped into the center cf the stage. Mrs. Brown was locked up last night in the Mercer Street Police Station. Her troubles had nothing to do di rectly with any matrimonial proposi tions. She was merely beseiged by two creditors, one of whom came for tified with a warrant and detectives. Tne creditors were A Habeeb, of 36 Greenwich street, and S. Hamra, of 2b Rutgers street. Both are Syrians and deal in laces, rugs, kimonos, and such things. Habeeb s warrant was made out against Mrs. J. Wallace Brown, formerly of 114 West Seventy-third street.
