Tryon St. Today' s Markets J. S. Bache & Co.'s Cotton Letter. New York, Aug. 20. On easier ca bles, and reported cooler temperatures in the Southwest, cotton opened 7 to 8 points lower, and stood the same on the early afternoon prices keeping within a six-point range. There was no feature to the trading, and the lead ing professional traders committed to j tne bear side was not oown The news was more oearish than bullish. In ad dition to the lower cables and cooler weather reported from Texas, a St. Louis house said the crop in southeast Missouri, Aarkansas, northeast Tas . and northeast Okianoma had come trying weather condition in good shape. Rain, however, is needed, i-ar-is, Texas reported crops on gray lands pracically ruined, but on black lands it was not hurt so much. The Houston and New Orleans dispatches remmind ed the trade that the boll weevil had been practically exterminated by the extreme heat, and London said the Egyptian crop promised to be a bump er one. Maximum temperatures in Texas yesterday range from 6 to 110 minimum 68 to 80 temperatures over 100 degrees were reported from Missis sippi and the Southewst generally, but yesterday's weather news was without effect on the markets, except, perhaps, to keep it from breaking more than it did. Buying power is limited because of the approach of the new crop move ment. Rain was reported today from some points in North Texas. $ 3 and $3.50 Summer Pants $1.50l For Saturday Only They are this season's make, semi and full nez ton. roll or nlain bottom. look swell with Black or Blue Coat. New York, Aug. 20. The stock mar ket opened irregular but with stocks which showed the greatest weakness yesterday scoring good gains today. Union Pacific opened at 206 3-4, but met some large sales and went off to 206. Later it got back to its opening figure. Violent Break in Market. There was a violent break in the stock market soon after the opening under influence of bear raid, misgiving as to health of Harriman and manifest lack of support to the recent specula tive favorites. Union Pacific dropped to 204; United States Steel, to 73 1-4 and Southern ra cific to 130 3-8. The market showed some fever ishness, Reading and Union Pacific fluctuating in the neighborhood of a point. Considerable stock changed hands in an early brake, sales for the first hour running above half a million shares. Local stocks were marked up vigor ously. Bonds were heavy. The market continued to be kept in a rather nervous state by the fre quent wide fluctuations in Union Pa cific. Indications of support and some demand from the short interest caused a brisk rally afterwards which carried many stocks up from 2 to 2 1-2 above their, low prices of , the day. - BRIKFS The Stonewall Hotel bell boys and lobby servants have been fitted out with blue uniforms. A decided improvement is being made at the New York Lunch Room on West Trade street by the placing of a plate glass window in the front, which greatly adds to the appearance of the building. Material is being placed on the ground for the erection of the hand some new building for the Belk De partment Stores. Work will be push ed very rapidly and the building com pleted as early as possible. The artesian well now. being bor ed to supply water at the Selwyn Ho tel has reached a depth of 170 feet. Eighty feet of this distance is through soil, while 90 feet is through a solid bed of rock. The well will furnish one half of the amount necessary to supply the hotel and it is thought that in a few days the well will go deep enough to furnish enough water for the hotel. Mission Society to Entertain The Home Mission Society of the Trinity Methodist church will enter tain at the home of Mr. J. A. Jones, No. 1011 North Tryon street to-night from 8:30 to 11 o'clock. Refresh ments will be served and a musical program will be rendered. A silver offering will be taken. The people of the church, both young and old, are cordially invited to attend and bring any friends. True Bill in Hurley Case The Bill of Indictment Presented by Solicitor 'lark son charging In jury to Huilding Passed on by Gt and Jury. The grand jury this morning return ed a true bill against Mr. D. A. Hur ley under the new bill of indictment sent in to it yesterday by Solicitor Clarkson charging the defendant with injury to and mutilation of a building as a result of the shots alleged to have been fired by him at his wife at the Bui'ord hoted some time ago, the original bill of indictment charg ing assault on Mrs. Hurley, having been changed as a result of the fail ure of the prosecuting witness to appear here for the prosecution of the case. The bill under which the defendant now stands indicted conies under a statute which makes it an offense for a person to injure or muti late buildings by firing of pistols or otherwise. The case will probably not come up for trial before next week as Judge F. I. Osborne, the defendant's auorney, is at present out of the city and the case will not be called until his return. Van Gaff ney, colored, who was bound over to superior court yes terday morning from the Recorder's court charged with the embezzle ment of $5 given him by a white man for the purpose of securing a pint of whiskey, was this morning tried and found guilty. He was sentenced to six months in the county jail sub-! 4 .... -4 1. .1 . . - . 1. ........ 1 jcti 10 me uiucis ul liic i;juuty com missioners. The case against R. A. Purser in which the defendant was charged with the seduction under promise of marriage of Miss Eva Hughes was nol prossed, the defendant having married the young lady and com plied with the requirements govern ing such statutes. Rgquisition papers had been issued for the defendant, who at the time was in South Caro lina and the papers had been receiv ed by the clerk here, but the defend ant returned to Charlotte Wednesday night and the marriage was perform ed. Rufe Walker, charged with retailing was this morning tried and, being convicted, was sentenced to six months in jail. Mr. W. L. McCall pleaa guilty in a case charging him with retailing and was fined $50 and costs and required to give a bond of $100 for his appearance at succeeding terms of court for eigh teen months to show good behavior and tkat he has not been dealing in whiskey. Judgment was suspended in two other cases. The case against Charley Bostic, colored, charged with assault wa3 begun shortly before nooon and is being heard this afternoon. Col. T. L. Kirkpatrick is appearing for the de fendant. Charley is charged with hav ing attempted to use a rock on one of his colored neighbors, though he firmly contends that he only picked it up to protect himself against an attempted assault by the latter. Charlie said that the prosecuting witness' wife borrowed a pound o sugar from his wife and that when it was returned it contained bits of. glass which he contends had been placed in it by the witness in an at tempt to injure him. Charley said he was eating a piece of pie, in the making of which the returned sugar had been used, when he discovered that it contained glass. He then ex amined the sugar and found it full of ground glass. Shortly afterwards he met the witness and asked him why he put the glass in the sugar, and he declares that the latter cursed him and said, "I put it in there to kill you," and started towards him and he simply picked up the rock to protect himself, but did not use it. The following true bills were re turned this morning: Charley Crow, retailing; Eliott Glenn, fraud; Jim Wright, false pretense; Ed. Jones, Car breaking, and D. A. Hurley, in juring building. Why is Sugar Sweet?; If sugar did not dissolve in the mouth you could not taste the sweet. GROVE'S TASTELESS CHILL TONIC is as strong as the strongest bitter tonic, but you do not taste the bitter because the ingredients do not dis solve in the mouth, but do dissolve readily in the acids of the stomach. Is just as good for Grown People as for Children. The First and Original Tasteless Chill Tonic. JACOB HARRIS Thone1582-J 1 4 North Church Street A Family Incident. Johnny had a splinter in his foot, but refused to let anyone touch it. His mother finally, appeared with a willow switch iii herj hand, and, under cruel threat, Johnny was ordered to lie still while grandma applied a poultice. "Ma," began Johnny. "Silence!.' comamnded his mother. : The poultice was finally applied and the bandage carefully sewed.
