In side of the first half hour prices worked up to a net advance of from 15 to 20 points on active covering and bull support but commission houses turned sellers around 15.15 for May, presumably for the purpose of taking profits and as soon as long cotton began to come on the mark et there was a renewal of Wall Street bear pressure, under which prices eased off 3 or 4 points from the best during the middle of the morning. Spot houses were good buyers of March on the slight reaction follow ing the early advance and with a continued demand from scattering shorts held steady during the late forenoon, with the market at middav ruling within a point or two of the best, or at a net advance of about 17 points. Tlie stoclv soon made a further advance. Min neapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste Marie gained a point. The tone of the gen eral list was irregular with a sprink- Iing of gains nnd losses. Some heavi ness was shown by U. S. Steel. The market became reactionary and prices declined moderately with pres sure directed especially against U. S. Steel, Reading. Union Pacific and A.maigamated Copper. This level un covered buying orders in sufficient volume to check the decline and there ■was a general recovery under the lead ership of Canadian Pacific, which ad vanced further to 203 7-8, an overnight gain of approximately 8 points. Busi- iiesB in general was depre&sed pend ing the publication of the monthly tonnage statistics of the United States Steel Corporation. Prices were irregular and inclined to be heavy throughout the morning and the market was dull.
