It is a well-known fact tn't pii'd/r.ont region of the Caro- lit'as is a valuable prold mining region, a - atf sfed by much gold procured in H past 75 years. The gold ore is l- an, and by methods used in the past is diflicnlt to smelt, therefore as a U' ld Kiii.ing rcrion it declined in iavor of Calli’oinia, where rich, free light- it.g erf- 'vas found. \'. h( !4 a?:. .'M'es v» hicii are lean and difllctill to siiielt are now profitably handled by juodern processes. Therefore be it ■llesolved; That The Greater Char lotte Club take active steps to cause the assay office to be continued in operation, and that if necessary a com mittee of three or more be sent to Washington to present the matter to the senators and representatives of North Carolina. Big Cocking Main In Virginia Washington, Jan. 20.—Maryland and North Carolina game birds fought seven desperate battles in one of the Virginia counties near here last week, and it took seven fights be fore the main Avas decided in favor of the Maryland cocks. Nearly 500 lovers of the feathered trible congre gated around the improvised pit, and considerable money changed hands on each light an on the general re sult. The principals in the contest placed a side bet of $r)00 on the re sult of the main and $50 on each fight. Everything w^as conducted in an orderly manner, and in the audi ence was observed some of 'Wash ington’s leading business and profes sional men. The first fight was between top- weight six-pound chickens. North Car olina showed a blue red and Mary land a brown-red. The bule cock dis abled the IMarylanu bird, and it w'as only a matter of time before the lat ter was put completely out. As a curtain-raii’er the fglit served to put the crowd in a proper mood for the sport to follow. There was heavy betting in the opener, both sides having great coniidiience In their birds, and the Maryland sports lost a bundle o£ coin, as the brown-red did not have a chance at any stage of the game. In the second battle two bottom- weights were matched, beautiful lit tle white hackles, a span.gle for Ma^'vland and a IMue-red with yellow legs for North Carolina. This was a tattling with honors even to several I'ittings. The Maryland bird broke his opponent's leg short off at the hip. and the crippled chicken was fi’-'ishcd by a b’-ai't )>iow’ a few' minutes later, nfter try' desperate ly to rally from his injury. In the third figl.'t North Carolina showed a hard, ]jrown-red, Mary land a beautiful ginger-white hackle. The betting on this battle exceeded that in the first bout, as both sides had been tipped off by their friends that it was the time to get the iuoney down. The fight bore out the ;judgnient of l)0th sides, as it was a corking scrap, seldom equaled and never excelled in these parts. The handler of t.he North Carolina cook finally picked ’ip the dead bird and walked out of tlie pit.* This made two out of three for Tvlaryland. Tar Heel Loses Eye. In the fourth fight the Maryland bird seemed lO have the better of evevy break, l iit it was nearly even. In the early 'light the Xcrth Carolina bird lost an eye, ’(vhich greatly les sened his chances, and lie appeared to be at the mercy of tlie Marj^land cock for se\eral pittings. The betting went to 10 to 3 on the Maryland bird wiUi few lakers. The ^laryland bird, however, broke his antagoraisfs neck, ending the fight. At this stage of the game, al though Maryland had won three out of four fights, it looked as though North Carolina was showing the best conditioned birds, while Maryland displayed the best stock and had a slight advaiiTr.ge in the break of hick. In the fifth fight. North Carolina showed a rugged looking gray and Maryland a white hackle.” They w’ere of; like j.'ghtning^ and at the first flight rolled clear across the pit. When the cocks separated it w^us seen that the hackle had a broken leg. The hackle could put up no sort of argument, and his handler gave it up. The defeat of the Maryland bird gave North Carolina two out of five fi.chts. In the sixth fight T)oth sides pre sented beautiful hali’-whito hackles, and they looked so much alike tiiat the sports had trouble in distinguish ing them. The cocks fought for two hours and twenty minutes,'when the fight was declared a draw. Neither cock \^as seriously injured, although badly winded. In ^he ^^tventh scrap. North Caro lina offered a dark red and Maryland a light red. While it lasted the fight was the fastest of the main, but the Maryland bird disabled his antagon ist early in the game, and finally put him. out wath a brain crack. The main ended 4 to 2 in favor of Maryland, with one drawn fight. Lots of people who are convinc ed we shall know one another in heaven succeed admirably in forget ting u shere.
