Local senti ment appeared to be against the mar ket and there was considerable sell ing on bulges, but there was no renew al of the liquidating movement during the early trading and whil esomewhat irregular the market held within a point or two of the best during the middle of the morning. General business continued quiet during the early afternoon, but it looked as if som.e of the old bulls who are supposed to have liquidated considerable cotton recently, were buying again and prices worked up to a net advance of about 12 to 13 points on the old crop months. New Orleans. Jan. 24.—Cotton fu tures opened steady. 1 to 5 points up on the old crop months and 2 iioinLs off on the new'. Cables were favorable In the early trading ring shorts were inclined to cover as the result of in creased spot sales in the Liverpool market and the report that East In dian mills were buying low’ grade American cotton because of the great rise in the price of native cotton. The v/eather map indicated light showers in Texas but no enough rain fell to make the map a market feature. .41 the end of the first half hour of busi ness the trading months were 5 to 6 points over yesterday’s close. Reports that leading dry goods mer chants claimed a dacided improvement in the demand for goods since the first of Ja)mary and an advance of from 1-4 to 1-2 in prices, together with private Liverpool cables refjorting that Man chester had been calling cotton freely helped the market here during the middle of the morning and prices sold up to a net advance of about 10 to 11 points. Outside speculation failed to broaden on the advance and slight re actions occurred from the best, but the market at mid-day was quiet and steady within 2 or 3 points of the top. Spot, quiet; middling uplands, 14.75 nominal. The market was dull but steady throughout the morning session. To ward the middle of the morning there was a slight sag which put the active months within a point or tvvo of yes terday’s close. This was due to offer ings from the long side. Later the market strengthened again on reports of a continued good .s^pot demand in the interior on telegrams from New York stating that prominent dry goods houses were claiming that thus far this year they have done a record-break ing business. At noon the active months were 9 to 10 points over yes terday’s close. In the afternoon session the mark et was very steady on a moderate amount of trading. At 2 o'clock the trading months were 10 points over yesterday’s close. , Close Ne wOrleans Spots. New Orleans. .Jan. 24.—Spot cotton firm, unchanged; sales on the spot 1,050 bales; to arrive 900. The New York cltv bonds v.^ere the most active feature, a block of $200,000 selling at 1.01 1-4. Mis souri, Kansas & Texas, preferred, ^^“18 up a point and 2,500 shares of Lnited States Steel sold at an ini tial gain of 3-8 but this was soon lost. Laclede Gas gained 1-2, St. Paul 3-8 and Nortliei'n Pacific and Missouri Pacific 1-4. Ofter a slight setback the market hardened, Reading and Lehigh Valley gaining nearly a point and oiher shares smaller fractions. Trading was quiet pending the outcome of the city bond f.ale. The market displaced little life in t.ie morning session, traders restrict- ing their operations to a minimum, while awaiting returns from the city bond sale later in the day. It was re cognized that the course of the market hinged largely on the outcome of the flotation of this issue. The market grew sensibly firmer toward mid-day ?nd there were some good advances in a few of the minor specialties. Bonds were steady. Leading stocks ruled above their forenoon figures, but there was scarce ly any demand. Speculation grew steadily stronger and there vvas a moderate increase in busoiess. The placing of a large or der for steel rails by New Y’ork Cen tral Railroad started buying of United States Steel, and it mounted a point to 78 1-8; Interborough-Metropolitan, pfd., M’as bid up 1 1-2, Colorado Fuel 1 3-8; Lehigh Valley 1 5-8, and Union Pacific, 1. t: ■ ■ Ic ''i-'i sa A;:;::! i'Sr'; Off., 'SOt -A 0; ’'“are,., '•';e r."..'
