A bill to ))rotect insurers in fire in- ! surp.nce eoni'.'anies not licensed to do [ ! l)usincss in North Carolina was ])ut on j readings and VA'as explained by ]\Ir. j I Turlington as desirAi'iOd to permit thej ! insurer, in case of live loss, to serve ; f^ununons on the foreign company by i filing a co])y with the state commis- ' sicmer of insurance, thereby domesti- ' eating the conii)any so far as that rar- |iictilar ri.'k is concerned. He explain- ; ed that utulcr present conditions par lies insuring with such companies are 1 ut to great trouble and risk in col lecting their claims in case of disa greement. The proposed law would iilso require that all policies taken with unlicensed companies be filed with the insurance commissioner and the tax of 5 per cent on the policy paid by the policyholder. There \vas iengthy discussion in which it devel oped that the bill would have th^ ef fect of nullifying the present law that an agent representing an unlicensed company in this state is guilty of a misdemeanor. Then the bill w-as de feated on a roll call vote of 24 to :J1. Argument on Hours of Labor •Bill. The Quickel bill to repeal that part of Sec. 4 Act of 1907 regulating the hours of labor for employees of rail roads which makes it a masdemeanor for any employee to violate the 16 hour law' came up on the proposition to adopt the minority favorable report from the judiciary committee No. 1. Ivlr. Quickel leading the fight for his bill, or rather for the minority recom mendation from committee that it ])ass Mr. Quickel argued at length discuss ing especially the supreme court case of Lloyd vs. Southern, in which the plaintiff could not recover damages for injuries because he had been guilty of the misdemeanor of w'orking over time when he was njured. Mr. Battle, of Wake, spoke at length against the bill, especially holding that the Including of the employee in the misdemeanor liability was espe cially for the protection of the travel ing public. Rawies, of Pamlico, favor ed the minoi’ity report. The house took recess at 2 o’clock without action, to meet again at 8 o’clock to discuss the Stubbs bill to amend the constitution. See Here, Ed Keesler I want to know one thing of you; Does your rather unique sityle of adver tising pay? O, 1 know' people read them. My w*ife and children look for jour changes first thing every day. In fact, I've got in the habit myself, but does it bring you business?” LISTEN TO THAT, NOW, JOHNNY JONES, and break out crying. There are but three elements in successful adver tising, viz: securing attention; having SOMETHING to offer; telling the truth about it. I’ve never knowingly misrepresented my offerings, and I never tender that in w'hich 1 haven’t the utmost coniidence. As to getting attention and securing business; with but one head, two hands, and a pair of clumsy feet, I don’t see how' I can do much more thf^u at present. I work day and night and have tw'o practical helpers, the latest tools, up-to-date systems, and still I’m sawing wood when I should be sleeping.
