FEBRUARY 2, 1911. humanity Is only surpassed by his utter recklessness in classing the last two mentioned species along with the first. A bachelor may lead a dog’s life, metaphorically speaking, and at times the justice of the peace may consider his lot nothing short of beastly, but to put the two on a parity with the first mentioned Is a punishment nor deserved by them, as it is a recognition the dog has never really merited. ♦ FICTION MAGAZINE. ♦ ♦ > ♦ v> ♦ i; -:: 'd and worn, my ♦ i ■ a. u)' tl those Ilction ♦ ^ ni . j, Coy I- n’frf’.'h-norit ♦ ..I: 1 rrail nf many a ♦ .(••■I ir ci>\'l)oy c»nnipi* or •' c i r. r!-i t••p.niti'; atnl 1 • .1 * ; lli-> rtip "1. 1.' fl.rt'- ❖ ! ■ .•• IT'.-4 nco rl( h. It is scarcely to bo doubted that a tremendous majority of American citizens would vote in favor of the proposed reciprocity treaty with Can* ada if given such an opportunity. President Tait has taken a long step in the right direction in proposing such a renioval of the resent tariff wall. Strength to his right arm in the fight which will naturally ensue with standpatters. It is almost too much to hope that congress will sanc tion bis suggestions at this session. The trade barricT botwren Canada and the Ignited Slates has borne heavily upon ronsuiuers. Should the proposed treaty bo ptit into effect a pronounced reduction in those com modities exchanged by the tv,o coim- tries might be expected. C!rnin, lum ber. food p^'oducts—many articles are affected by the tariff wall now In effect. The United Sta'es carries on a big business in exports with Can ada, and vice ver.=!a. The removal of high duTit's on arti.'los exdiangod winild work to tlie bcneiU of con- ■■^umers of both countries. It is hard ly to ’■'0 ’'owever, that pro tective t: ’. iff ri^i"-Mirr.us will easily abandon tl'nir prt il.Lurie'. and tliG ultimate decision on this matter will no doubt be long delayed. BACHELORS IN BAD COMPANY. Rfpreseutative Ewart, who, by the wav, appears to Inve coiitracted the habit of contintiously introducing bills, has juFt proposed a measiirf; whlrh may result in his political in cineration. He proposes to place a fax on “(logs, justices of the peace find bachelors.” Tliih la not the first Rhaft oimod at the dog. As a matter of fact ho is getting to be more in disgrace daily, and it is most probable that his Ubertlea will be greatly curtallod by lawmakers. Justices ot the peace—a hard workeil set whoso labors are rarely ever appreciated—have thus far es caped the daggers of the lawmakers. And as for the bachelors—since time immemorial a lot of he women and Bhe men have attempted to further burden down their souls—nd- minister the third degree, as It were. Instead of being ttixed the bachelor stands out alone as in first need of ];^sion. Mr. Ewart’s In- Bad Taste in the Mouth Dizziness, and a general “no account” feeling is a sure^ sign of a toi^id liver. The remedy is Simmons Red Z Liver Regulator (The Powder Form). ^ It exercises its greatest restorative effect in tiie liver, yet it is effective in the stomach and bowels. Indi gestion, constipation and their attendant evils disap pear before its powerful, regulating influence. Try its wholesome purifying proper ties. Let the report be made at the Winston meeting.—Charlotte News. Suggests a liookworm expert for our case, does he? We are beginning to feel like some peace-maker is going to get it in the neck, some bystander is going to get shot, be cause even if Wichard, of The Re flector, does labor under the sad, crazy impression that our soft blonde tresses are a brickdust hue like his own top-knot, a hookworm expert can’t pass upon the merits of the case. We'll be ding-busted if there 13 anything slow about either one of us.—Wiliiiiugton Dispatch. A Red-Headed Contemporary. Hear, ye this from the Raleigh Evening Times: “What effect does the hookworm have on the color of the hair? Pat- lon, of the Charlotte News, says it causes red hair, bv.t Cowan, of The Wilmington Dispatch, resents the allegaiion and threatens to show, the allegator a thing or two. We also ex]iect to see Wichard, of the Greenville Reflector, for obvious rea sons, come to the defense of the red-headed m-an. Patton, however, has been making a special study of hookworm and may be able to defend his position.” Dog-rot ill There’s that dam hook worm again! Of course, we know our position clearly, but have we got to insist on Dr. Stiles calling on Wichard? Its ’nough to make a fel low red-headed when he isn't.—Wil mington Dispatch.
