Two dinky engines with the requi site number of dumps to each engine and six ganiTs of workmen, comprising between oO and 40 men, are engaged today in makinc: the dirt fly just out side. and on this side of Gastonia, tha lirsr ground broken in the construction of the interurban line to extend from Charlotte to King's Mountain. A gentleman who came in this morning from GaS'tonia states that there is a great deal of interest in the itiiiial work on the part of Gastonia people, who ai‘c in plentiful attendance at the tlacks just outside the city where two steam shovels are at work. Tile shovels are of the same type as (hose used in the great Culebra cut in Panama. They are of course, worked i'\ steam power, being attached to an eu'-ziTic and able to uproot at one stroke a good sized tree, roots and all. The engine is on a track which is laid down live feet at a time as the >ho\el (iigs out a path in front of it. No spikes are used in laying tho track b:,! the rails are koi't from sp.reading or lu.uir.e b}- iieiug b.raeed together by a specially desigsied iron rod with a clasp for holding each rail.
