March 24.—In the United States court today J. F. Smith, a farmer. L. F. Reins, a constable, and 11. W. Heins, a justice of the peace, all of Baxley, Aj)pling county, pleaded guilty to penoage. They were charg- Cfi with having several men arrested through the efforts of the justice and his son who was a constable and forc ing them to work. Judge Speer fined Smith $2,000, L. Cold Weather 1oi The Time of Year The v;eather was 32.4 degrees this morning at sunrise according to the thermometer at office of the w^eather bureau. At 8 o’clock it was 36 degrees At 10:30 o’clock it was 43 on the out side. These figures show nnnsnally cold w'eather for the latier part of March in the vicinity of Charlotte. Other points in North Carolina showing a corresponding degree of cold w'eather, the minimum at Wil mington this morning being 34 de grees, about two degrees higher than the registration at Charlotte. Other points along the Atlantic seaboard and in the middle west are also ex periencing a return of Boreal condi tions. The temi>erataure at Boston this morning w^as 16 degrees, while New' Y’ork had IS degrees. Zero weath er was reported this morning around the Great I^akes. * The line of freezing temperature this morning on the Atlantic coast touched at Norfolk and extended nortli- easteriy as it crossed toward the Mis sissippi river. An area of warm temper ature prevails on the Pacific coast and in the southwestern ])art of the United States, wdiicli will cross the lower Mis sissippi and reach the South Atlantic states tomorrow. By Sunday a worm wave w'ill have arrived here. V/eather Forecaster O. O. Atto, says that very little daniage has been done to fruit in this vicinity by the recent cold w’aves and that there is not likely to another cold period of suffi cient intensity to do damage, both of w'hich statements will be cheering ad vice to everybody.
