Mr. Palmer headed a sub-commit tee that conducted a careful inquiry With the view to discovering why there were ‘jo many employes of the house, whether thev were needed, and^ what duties they performed. I'his is tile report which resulted in the democratic caucus deciding to loi. off ,'?l82,tiS0 worth of salaries in the service of the house. The committee found for instance, that the (hirteen-year-old daughter of Chict Doorkeeper i^yone was on the pay roll as “cierk to the door keeper” at a salary of .$1,200 a .vear and getting an extra month's pa.v earn >ear as iiart of the cheerful gratuity that congress is wonc to give t) contci(vssii)Ha! fnnplo.'es. When the new building was Oldened, the library section was re modelled and cut up into office rooms for senators and congressmen. On the directories of the building, these office rooms are alv.ays located as in the “old library si»ace." li seems that when the library was in ihis old section there were attend ants carried on the "liouse payroll. When The library moved away these attendants didn't go along; they be longed in the house, not in the libra ry. Palmer is a cold, hard, steely- ej ed, uns.\ mpathetic person who does not care any more for somebody’s else snap than he does for the left lobe of his cerebellum. There are seventy- four ))olicemen on duty at the capitol, and tile comiiiitiee, for the life of it, cotildn't figur-^ what these two night watchmen watched, unless it was the police. But at last the law is .going to be enforced, provided congress is pow erful enmigh to do it. Some fine morning there will be seen up on Caiptol Hill a death-grapple between the Imited States government and the clerk s document room.
