Notre Dame, THOUSANDS AT THE CRAND DPERA Atlanta, Ga., April 29.—Thousands of visitors including men, w'omen and children from all sections of Georgia and neighboring states, attended the initial performance of the Grand Opera season Thursday night when “La Gioconda” was rendered at the auditorium armory. All the great singers arrived in the city previous to the opening the follov/ing members of the Metropolitan Opera Company being in attendance: Farrar, Des- tinn, Alda, Homer, Rappold, Amata, Martin, Slezak, Goritz, Gilly and Se- gurio. Manager Gatti w^as at the helm with his superb personality directing the arrangements and opening per- fortnance of the greatest operatic or ganization in the world. From early morn w^hen the box office was opened and seats were put on sale, until late in the even ing there was a steady stream of eager purchasers in line waiting for an opportunity to secure tickets to the various performances. Most of the visitors had already made advance ar rangements for seats but despite this fact there were hundreds who had de cided to attend the great event at the last minute and who were tireless in their efforts to remain in line and obtain the best available seats. From a scenic and spect^fclar the production of Giaconda was the most brilliant ever seen In this country. The night scene in the climax of the second act, where a full rigged bark- entine is moored near the deserted bank of an abandoned island on the Fiisina lagoon was welcomed with un mistakable demontsratlons of wonder and astonished pleasure by the large audience. The burning of this bark in the latter part of the act by means of mechanical fire Is one of the tri umphs of stagecraft, and a sight which will long be remembered by the thousands who witnessed It last night. THE SCHiLlEBS DHAWINC H!El[ Atlanta, Ga.. April 2D.—Despite the fact that the Grand Opera is drav,-- ing immense crowds of theatre-goers other leading attractions at the local pipy houses are being patronized. The “Schiller’’ players at the Lyric theatre are meeting with great suc cess in their Initial v.eek’s perform ances and demonstrate the fact that legitimate plays are becoming more popular each year in the larger cities of the South. * At the Grand theatre three new players have been added to the cast to fill vacancies recently occasioned. Charles Arthur promises to become a favorite in this capacity among local theatregoers. Miss Annie Rogers, an other addition, is a product of Cali fornia, and is said td*.be unsurpassed as a dainty ingenue. Of The Planefs Pasadena, Cal., April 29.—The e> pert star-gazers of the Lick bbserva- tofy w'ere all 1 /Ttle and bustle today making ready the instruments they will use to photograph the phenome non of a thousand years—a “dress pa rade” of the planets. Earth, Jupiter. Saturn and the Sun will occupy positions in the limitless space of inflinity which will bring them in direct line with one another. From the position of the Sun, should one look into the sphere of planets, one w^ould see Earth, and behind this planet this planet would be hidden Jupiter and Saturn. The phenomenon obtains for several hours. Jupiter is next removed of the three iTrom earth. Saturn has its orbic beyond that of Jupiter, counting from the sun as the center of the uni verse. Prof. Adams and Dr. Hale, in charge of the Carnegie observatory on Mount Wilson, declare the inci dent of alignment of planets purely accidental. ‘It means nothing in particular, despite the fact that it occurs but once in a thousand years,” said Prof. Adams. “But we will take par ticular efforts to get good pictures of the planets as, under the unusual conditions of light, new characteris tics of them may be noted. It is a figured that, the direct rays of the sun being taken from the planets, they will present a different ( appearance.
