C., June 7.—There has been much concern felt here over the exact status of the local or munic ipal laws, since the commission form of governra'^nt went into effect. It Is geaerally known, or was univer sally recognized, that the candidates who were succesful, let it be under stood that they individually did not lavor many of the straight-laced ordi- nant'es enacted by former boards of aldermen, especially the Sunday law of the last board, which made certain ridiculous regulations about sellin.i ice cream, soft drinks, newspapers, mag azines, cigars, tobacco, etc., except on c rtain hours of a Sunday. , It was also contemplated that when the new charter took effect, the old ordinances ipso facto were a dead letter, and new laws would be neces sary. ('nmmissioner of Safety Brown im mediately gave notice that in future the ‘ blu':; laws ’ would be rigidly en forced on bunday? until they were amended or repealed. Yesterday afternoon at its regular session, the board of commissioners, by an unanimous vote, practically re pealed the alleged "blue law” by enact ing fhe following; ■'That it shall b-^ unlawful for any per son. firm or corpr.ration to sell, expose or offer for sale on Sunday goods wares or merchandise, provided: Jthat this section shall not be construed as prohiMting the sale of any article or thing of necessity. Provided, also, that ice cream, cigars, tobaccos, nev.-spa- pers and periodicals shall be construed as ner\''?sities; provided, further that toft drinks, when sold at soda foun tains, restaurants or cafes, shall also be construed as necessities. Under tu - commislson form this ordinance cannot p.o int t.*ect until the expiration of 2'‘t days. Should 25 per cent of thr voters who balloted for I ^ mayor, siga I'etitior for referendum or repeal o£ lav.-, ir stands suspended until elerri'.n on same by qualified vot ers. a majority voting to repeal being nece.'tary to nullity it. The ^^neral ferlir;? here is one of’| great sa'isfacMm at riie action of the board in repcr.hng tlie former law.'| whic’-; '.va= a mr ’l:-y f inconsistences if not a monument of hypocrisy. Louisville, June 7.—After serving a> a hostlery for over three quarters of a century, the old Galt house, famous in the history of the South, went under the auctioneer’s hammer today, bringing only $81,000. The onghial cost of the building and il;^ cfintents is said lo have be^-n up wards of $1,'100,000. It was sold by order of a referee in bankruptcy. The purchaser wa.s the .Mutual Beneiit l.ife Insurance Comapny of Newark, .V. J. The old Gault house was first opened in 18'?4 and was the scene r>f many social events in the ante- l.^^llum days of the South. It was de.stroyed by fire shortly after the war but^ was immediately rebuilt. THAT ARE SAFE “The Investment of My Savings is a Solemn Kind of Job.” This is the rather unique way in which one of our patrons who is known throughout the South as an educator and a great man referred to the matter of investments in a letter to us asking advice and suggestion. He wanted to place his savings where the principal would be safe and the yield satifactory. His letter affords us the opportunity to say that the only kind of investments we offer for sale are such as we believe would suit him, and other men like him. Nothing speculative about them, but simply safe and secure. Investments such as first mortgages on real estate in the shape of coupon bonds, in which, after careful investigation, we first place our own money, later to be sold to conservative investors. t American Trust Company Capital and Undivided Profits, $525,000.00 DIRECTORS: Geo.
