Negotiable Receipts Issued. Telephone 1578. American Brokerage & Warehouse Co. Charlotte, N. C. RESUME OF WEEK'S DEALINGS ON WILL STOEET (BY THOMAS C. SHOTWELL.) New York, Sfept. 9.-—New low re cords for the year were made in Wall Street today as a direct result of the government crop report of the previous day. This report confirmed the worst features of the August re port and caused free liquidation of securities. Prices declined up to the very close of the session. The spec ulative interest was a free seller of short stocks and made no attempt to cover. The United States Steel Corpora tion announced that unfilled orders on its books at the end of August were 111,900 tons greater than at the end of July. The number of idle cars has been reduced 19,629 since the previous report two weeks ago. Liquidation has been in progress throughout the week. In the begin ning it was cautious, but toward the close gelling became more urgent. The decline continued until several new low records were made on an nouncement by the government that crop conditions had not improved during the month of August. The September report published on Fri day simply confirmed that of the previous month. There will be, ac cording to this report, something like 116,000,000 bushels more of corn than expected the previous month, but the hay crop will be 2,00U, 000 tons less and wheat will be about 10,000,000 bushels less. This crop report furnished the only reason necessary for the decline in the market as the fact that it would be a bad report was well understood by the leading iDtefests. It is beginning to look as though there would be no strike on the Har- riman lines, either the Illinois Cen tral or the Union Pacific. The men hrve asked for arbitration, but the roads will refuse to arbitrate because arbitration would be recognition of the n^ union. The railroads have de cided definitely to make an open fight if jaecessary. The railroads will do nothing to avert a strike, and will welcome an opportunity to force the supreme court of the United States to decide what constitutes '“reason able” grounds for a strike. It is now recognized by both cap ital and labor that a strike is a vio lation of the Sherman anti-trust law just the same as is a pool in re straint of itrade. The court has said that "reasonable” combinations can be made, and Attorney General Wick- ersham, having announced that he will enforce the Sherman anti-trust law, will be compelled to prosecute every labor union that declares a strike. Leading capitalists believe in combinations both of capital and labor, and they believe in pools as well as in strikes, but both pools and strikes must be prosecuted. Sales of old Standard Oil stock were made at 645 in the same mark et that saw sales of the subsidiaries at 325 and of the stock “ex-subsidia ries” at 340. Thus the shareholders who split their property before selling got $20 more a share than those iselling without doing so. American Tobacco also showed considerable strength in expectation of an early annouijcement of a favorable plan of re-organization. Some very bad railroad reports were made during the week, notable among them being Northern Pacific, Great Northern and St. Paul. The last named showed that it did not earn its dividend for July. The other two showed very mate rial' decreases in net. Rumors were current of bad reports soon to be is sued by ^e Gould railroads, and this had the effect of sending Missouri Pacific to the lowest price of the year. American'Beet Sugar was the one conspicuously strong issue, and this was due to the fact that refined sugar is now selling at the highest price in twenty years. The beet sugar com pany' has just harvested the great est crop on record and the company will put its common stock on a divi dend basis of 4 pef cent before the end of the year. DR. A. J. The Spanish loss was one officer and three privates kill ed and 25 wounded. The tribesnien were dispersed after a battle lasting several hours. Troop ships with more than 3,500 Spanish soldiers aboard left Southern Spain today for Alhucemas Island, on the coast of Morocco.
