Ifi here a trust in coffee? asks W. Ukers, editor of Tea and Coffee Trade Journal, in October Good Housekeep ing* Magazine. Representative Norris has aaked congress to investigate, and the department-of justice is busily en gaged in digging up facts. Nobody pretends to ignore the fact that there is an “unreasonable re straint of trade” in coffee in this coun try. The wholesale price of coffee is being forced up by this clique, not because there ia a scarcity of coffee, for the storage warehouses are bulging with the surplus. This condition has been brought about by the working out of Brazil’s colossal valorization plan, as it is termed. The Brazilians were produc ing far more coflfee than the world needed, and Brazil produces 80 per cent of the world’s supply and 75 per cent, of all the coffee consumed in the United States. Ruin was stalking across the faz endas when some shrewd financiers evolved a plan to con trol the sup ply. The scheme was working out beau tifully, thanks to the co-operation of the Brazilian government, when the American dealer and consumer sudden ly awoke to the fact that they were the ones selected by the international val- orizationists to pay the price. Then followed newspaper publicity, congres sional action and governtnental iny^estl- gation.
