Local Republicans Are Non-Committal At a meeting of the local republi cans held Saturday and called at the instance of several prominent mem bers of the party, the local organiza tion voted by a strong majority not to commit themselves as to a choice of a presidential candidate for the presidential campaign. Mr, Medill McCormack, a well- known repTiblican from Chicago, was in the city for a few days last week sounding the local G. O. P.’s as to whether their support of President Taft might be expected or whether they would favor some other candi date. The result of this visit was that several local republicans address ed Chairman Jake F. Newell, of the county executive committee,’ asking a meeting to take up the matter. The result, as stated above, was an agree ment not to commit themselves. While the sentiment among them here is said not to be favorable to the re-election of President Taft, there ie also a lack of unanimity for Senator La Follette, who is the choice of most of the “insurgent” republicans, especially those of the west. Mr. Warren Vines Hall, among the prominent local members of the party, says h« is no lover of insurgency of the western type and his opinion is shared by the majority of the party in this county, evidently. JAMES C. DAHLMAN, “COWBOY” mayor of OMAHA, “THROWS THE LARIAT” Mayor Jas. C. Dahlman is of an in teresting and impressive personality. Starting his career as a cowboy, he is at present Mayor of Omaha, and has the following record to his credit: Sheriff of Dawes Co., Neb., three terms; Mayor of Chadron, two terms;' Democratic Nat’l Committeeman, eight years; Mayor ol Omaha, six years, and in 1910 Candidate for Governor of Ne braska. Writing to Foley & Co., Chi cago, he says; “I have taken Foley Kidney Pills and they have given me a great deal of relief so I cheerfully recommend them. Yourfei truly (Signed), JAMES C. DAHLMAN. Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 10.—^An elephant with a ten-penny nail stuck in its foot caused more commotion on Peachtree street yesterday than could twenty au tomobiles with punctured tires. The big animal, one of the circus bunch, rolled over on its side, stopped all traffic, and wildly waved Its foot In the air until the elephant driver, armed with a big pair of pinchers, located the nail and drew it out. Then the elephant shed tears of joy, lifted the driver back with its trunk, and pur sued its way. BOB JONES SPEAKING TO GREAT CROWDS. Special to The News. Special to The News. Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 10.—Atlanta is up agaiilst the problem this fall of wheth er or not the public can support two high-classed legitimate theatres. In | 'addition to the vaudeville and popular | price houses. Thus far. It seems that United States le carried by mail for some part of its journey, and that these trips vary from a few miles to the entire span of the continent, it is“ surprising to leam that the total cost' to the government of the services of the railways in carrying the m^l from toe point of its origin to thet town or city of its destination is les% than the cost of local delivery and^ collection. In other words when you mail aj letter from yoin: Georgia post office to some friend in San Frandaco, it cosfe the government less to tak^ it across the continent, than it does to transport it from the Frisco post office two ot; three miles to your friend’s frrat; door. - And recently the railroads of the na-f tion, in Georgia and elsewhere, hay^ made a systematic and serious com plaint, filed through the proper chan? nels, that the railroads are not bein^ paid nearly as much as they should re^ ceiv^e for this senrice which tt^ fOTm for Umile 'Sam. r > ' j- It is the opinion of experts that the money paid the railroads now is sO iii- ad.equate as to cause the roads a loss of milliona every year on the handling^^ oflm^ matter. .
