Dt. Jerome Bruce
^ Died Last Week
Distinguished Brothet of Mrs.
L. J, Dowd Passes Away at
Sandford, Fla. — Vcjsatile
Writer; Skilled Physician,
And a Southern Gentleman,
Mrs. L. J, Dowd of North Tryon
street, received the sad news yester-
lay of the death of her only, brother,
Dr. Jerome Bruce, of Sanford, Fla.
Dr. Bruce was a native of Carthage,
N. C. He was a man of marked ability
and prominence In both his native
and adopted states.
Dr. Bruce is recalled as a prominent
visitor to the city last summer. He
spent several weeks with his sister,
and later joined her and hy farnily
in the mountains of western North
Carolina. his passing. The Me
tropolis, one of the leading papers of
Jacksonville says in Friday’s issue:
“After a brief illness at the resi
dence of his daughter, Mrs. P. H.
Boyer, 617 Laura street. Dr. Jerome
Bruce, of Sanford, Fla., quietly passed
away at 3:40 o’clock yesterday after
noon.
“Dr. Bruce was the author of that
celebrated portrayal of ante-bellum
days, “Studies in Black and White,”
being pre-eminently fitted to Write
such a story, as he was one of the
fast decrjeasing number of “old school
Southern gentlemen."
• “The talent of Dr. Bruce was versa
tile, he having been a writer and
skillful medical man. He was more
than this. He was beloved as a man,
citizen, friend and Christian gentle
man. He was a member of the Church
of Christ.
Was Highly Esteemed.
“The following excerpt from an old
issue of the Sanford Herald voices the
esteem of those among whom Dr.
Uruce lived for^ many decades:
“ ‘Dr. Jerome Bruce came to Sanford
in 1894 aid for sixteen or seventeen
years was actively engaged in the
practice of medicine, endearing him
self in many ways to the hearts of
our citizens. ^ As a physician he stood
in the front rank with an* experience
dating back to 1856, at which time he
graduated from Jefferson Medical Col
lege, Philadelphia. He retires now,
moves away from* us, and will be
sadly missed bi”^ all who know him.
Inclement weather, nor feeble health,
nOr old age never restrained this noble
man when called on to visit a human
sufferer, no matter how poor or ob
scure, and many of these live today
to testify to his professional skill and
tender attention. His sympathy with
his patients was one'of his chief char
acteristics, and his kind words and
gentle touch will long- be remembered
from the monsion to the cabin.
“‘It is with, profound-regret that
our peole part from Dr. Bruce as
physician and friend, and as one of
the most cultured, courtly gentlemen
who ever came into our midst.
"Bearing with him the highest es
teem of the community ^ and sincere
love of his friends he retfbxhs to New
berry, S. C., where we trust he may
long live in the enjoyment of pleasant
old jnemories and associations.’
