Osborne, Lawn* The average American poultry keeper needs fowls that combine tne qualities of good laying and good meat production and tliat are hardy. He doesn’t want Leghorns, because Leghorns make poor roasters, nor Cochins, since Hhey amount to little as layers. The Orpington, big, hand some birds, have white skin and legs, whereas the fixed American market demand is for yellow. The flesh of the Plymouth Jlock, which is an excellent winter layer is of coarse texture, and Rock hens go broody too hard and too often. Wyandottes don't give quite enough eggs, and those that they do give are irregular in color and shape. In fact, the absolutely perfect com bination fowl has not appeared; there is always some fault in evidence, or some quality lacking. I think that tHe receiving line consisted of Mr. ahd Mrs. Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Courtney, Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Kent, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Weaver, Mr. aiitt Mrs. H. C. Martin, and Mr. B. P. Wake field, whose greeting to the guests of the evening was characteriied ' by, that hearty hand-shake and pleasant words of appreciation characteristic p! of the genuine Southern hospitality. Many of the guests who were invited did not attend the reception on ac count of the disagreeable weather ] conditions, but sent messages ot cheer along wiih their regrets. *a the family room Mrs. M. Bl. Shell , presided at the punch bowl, from [ which aelicious fruit punch was sery- ' . to those who came. On elthi?r 1 side of the fireplace tne many pres ents received were displayed.. A pret- ! tier lot of silverware presents have never been seen' in Lenoir, Miss Helen Shell received and displayed the many pieces of silverware, pr^ sented as tokens of esteem for host and hostess. The dining room was in charge of Mesdames C. M. Pickens, and W. S. Brawley, who served the some quality lacking. Washington, * Dec. 23.—No official confirmation as to the extreme serious ness of Charles W. Morse’s condition had been received in Washington this afternoon. At the white houae it was said that President Taft would keep in close touch with Morse’s condition through acting Attorney General Fow ler, and that the absence of Attorney General Wickersham would make no difference in the president’s course if | unofficial reports proved correct.
