Her hands were negligently laid . Upon her slender hips. While an Egyptian cigarette was resting on her lips Her black hair had the mystery Of gloomy forest nights; Between her narrowed eyelids shone A glow of amber lights. tTufine translueent skin betrayed The pulsing blood beneath And when she moved her body seemed A lily in its sheath. Then her decadent fingers flicked The ash into the tray! He raised his head expectantly To hear what she might say. He shivered at her blighted gaze. The gaze of one long dead. "This is a prettv rotten world.' "Yes, isn't it?' he said. London Opinion. CHARACTER PERMANENT. planners carry the world for the mo ment, character for all time. A. Bron son. THE WOMAN WHO HAS ASPIRA TIONS. Aspirations make the world go aroun. Of that wc all feel sure. And no cne ought to criticise mankind for dreaming. U i3 a good thing for wom en to look forward to the day when their position will be in every way better than it is today. It is a good thing for them to plan in their mind the pari they will do in the great "uplift"', movement that is going for ward now. That is to say, all these things are good if the woman who does the dreaming does not neglect the present while she is dreaming of the future. While the young housewife sits in the living room dreaming of the com ing age when housework will be free from drudgerv when a woman can j be a perfect wife, mother and house keeper and still have time and energy It ft so that she can be president or queen, congresswoman or financier, perhaps the potatoes are burning or the baby is crying itself into a state of nervous unhappiness or the week ly mending is lying unattended to. And of course the dust is collecting and today's work, whatever it may be, is piling up for tomorrow. Let modern woman dream on. Of dreams realities are made. But while she dreams let her do the work of the present. Perhaps an age of drudgery les work is coming but it is still far away. Every one respects the woman who puts her shoulder to the wheel after making it as smooth and well oiled a wheel, of course, as she can and pushes ahead in the work of the world. She can dream and plan for the future as she pushes. Virginian Pilot. CROWDER-GRAHAM MARRIAGE. Mr. E. W. Crowder, whose mother lives in Fort Mill, S. Endymion a play by Ma ie Warren You are invited to be present. WHERE ARE THE POCKETS? Fashion now decrees that . women must have pockets to be smart. They may be concealed in puffs and pan niers or they may be in evidence. They may appear in coats, in trim waist coats or in skirts. They are shown on both plain and dressy creations, but they are a necessary part of the tailor suit for smartness as well as comfort. In skirts they seem to appear imme diately below the waist line in front, in th Ktraiffht. more or less plain trimmed braided and buttoned slits, be sure, for the pocket must adver tise itself. Many of this variety have the overflap fastened with clamps. But it is in the waistcoat that the natty little pocket shows up to ad vantage and gives decided smartness to the whole costume. The waistcoast pocket has unlimited possibilities. With it appears the watch fob. A young matron appeared the other day at a southern resort with a white suit, made with deep pointed waist coat fastened with lapis lazuli but tons, and hanging from the little shal low waistcoat pocket was a matching blue fob on a white grosgrain ribbon. The little pocket and blue fob did much toward the completeness and smartness of the whole outfit. 1 KIDS TO SEE KIDS. Washington, May 7. Wedding pres ents received by Miss Eleanor Ran dolph Wilson on her marriage todayj to Secretary McAdoo besides being numerous and valuable, have the add ed quality of being in many instances of a personal and domestic nature, signifying the interest taken in the home life of the new cabinet couple. The bridegroom, in addition to the splendid string of diamonds which his bride will wear at the wedding, is also reported to have given her the opal brooch, surrounded by a ring of large diamonds which she has worn fre quently of late and a wrist bracelet in which a tiny watch is bordered with diamonds. The engagement ring is said to have been a large diamond soiatire, and another ring from Mr. McAdoo was an opal surrounded by diamonds. The opal is a birth stone for both the bride and bridegroom, as their birthday anniversaries occur in October. The gift of the president and Mrs. Wilscn has not been made known but is understood to be something similar to the gift they made the first bride of the family, a set of furniture for the bride to use in her new home. The cabinet members and their wives united in giving an elegant set of silver dinner plates and a silver nlatter. The vice president and Mrs. Mar shall were not in this city at the Sayre-Wilson wedding for Mrs. Mar shall spent part of her last summer's leisure time in making by hand dainty things to give the bride. Her present to today's bride is also of a personal character. Several of the cabinet wo men have also sent the bride pieces of their handiwork in linen, lace and embroidery for perhonal and house hold use. The senate's' present was a gold bracelet studded with diamonds. The senate committee in charge of the gift consisted of Senators Martine of New Jersey, chairman, and Saulsbury of Delaware; Townsend of Michigan and Overman of North Carolina. The wives of the senators made the selection. The gift from the house, of repre sentatives was selected by a small committee headed by Representative James R. Mann. It consists of a silver tea service, a large tray, with kettle and stand,' tea pot. coffee pot, sugar bowl, cream pitcher, waste bowl and a pair of silver candelbra. There were many other presents from the large circle of relatives and friends. Big Show at Manager Gidley prograni for the commencing with the Piedmont. has an extra big Piedmont patrons today's matinees and one that will be the talk of the town. The features, and ther are two big ones, come to the Piedmont direct from a two-aday circuit of Keith The aters and Charlotte is fortunate in se curing such big-time acts. Heading the bill are the Alexander Kids; cute, cunning, captivating clev er children. Their billing used to ex press their talents not only complete ly explains the talents of the Alexan der Kids, but expresses them truthful ly. The two youngsters are indeed, cute, cunning, clever and captivating. In a series of dances and costume changes, they prove themselves youth ful wonders. The two prodigies have natural talents which is developed naturally and shows true ability. Mon tague's birds, the other big feature presents what is perhaps the most wonderful bird act ever seen in this city. Trained to the minute these feathered artists show human acumen and intelligence, indulging in trotting, hurdle jumping and chariot racing, as well as tango and butterfly dancing. The closing feature is particularly thrilling, being a "Fighting the Flames" scene, in which the birds use a real fire engine, hose-cart, and per fectly genuine fire apparatus. A dozen birds take part in the final. This is a great European novelty. Other fea tures to be seen include Petrie and Budd, two great eccentric comedians who are real laugh producers and put over a new line of comedy sing ing and talking. Mile Longenetto of fers her original protean novelty that press reports state is the best in the business. The bill is an extra strong one and should prove a great drawing one for the' Piedmont Theater the last three days of the week. FINGER'S DEATH INTERMENT HERE Mrs. Annie Tucker Finger, aged 23, died April 29, at the Presbyterial Hospital. Mr3. Finger had suffered for seven years with goiter. An oper ation was the last resort, and al thought successfully performed her system was too depleted to stand the shock. She eagerly underwent the operation preferring, aa ,she said even death to suffering such as she had endured. Mrs. Finger was a res ident of Charlotte for seven years. She was beloved by a wide circle of friends for her sweet womanly na ture, .kindness and earnest puritj. She was a member of Brevard Street Methodist church, and a very loyal and devoted one. The interment was in this city. You never can tell. The weaker a man is, the stronger his habits grow on him. A good dentist spares no pains to make his work satisfactory. FOR SALLOW, WRINKLED, FRECKLED, PIMPLED SKIN If you have any cutaneous blemish, don't use paint, powder or anything else to cover it up. Too often this only emphasizes the defect.. Besides, it's much easier to remove the disfigure ment with ordinary mercolized wax. Applied nightly the wax will gradually remove freckles, pimples, blackheads, moth-patches, sallowness. red or yel low blotches, or any surface eruptions. The affected cuticle is absorbed, a lit tle each day, until the clear, soft, youth ful and beautiful skin beneath is brought wholly in view. Ask the drng gist for an ounce of mercolized wax and use this like you use cold cream. Ilemove in morning with soap and wa ter. Many who have tried thuis sim ple and harmless treatment report as tonishing results. If bothered with wrinkles or crow's feet, a wash lotion made by dissolving an ounce of t-owdered saxolite in a half pint witch hazel will prove remarka bly effectual.
