With the advent of cool weather, the gridiron season is in full
swin^^, tliiit is, with the e.xception of CCUNC, and the only reason
for that is the lack of players. With the oi>ening t)f training there
is one man and his assistant who are going to have their hands,
full with the shap ng out of a team with the small amount of
nuLterial they have to work with. I hat man is Marion hootsie
Woods, head coach of the CC UXC  )wls, and his assistant, Jim
Taylor.
1-;ist year, under the direction of ,\rt Deremer, the Squad con
sisted of two teams and a very few substitutes, hut then there
was only a freshman class and about half as many students as
this year. C'i;ach Derenu'r was able to field fair ball club out of
what little m;iterial ho li;id to work with, but l>ecause of the weight
and ex|x‘rience of the clul)S that were scheduled last year, very few
of the ganK's were won. Th.s year with both freshman and sopho
more classes we shoud be able to have a s(|uad of about thirty-
five men, but up to this time there are approximately twenty boys
out for practice. The main shortage lies in tackles and centers. At
]>resent Huddy Drummond a 194 lb. tackle is nisning at the pivot
point l>eiause (>f the absence of Ralph “Red” W illiams who isi
out with a chest injury.
rhe guard spots will lie filled by such capalde material as Bob
Conder and Aril ur Toomer who were main stays in the Owls
line la.st year, also there is Hob Wylie and David Littlejohn, the
former one of Central High's best linesmen of last year and David
Littlejohn one of the sturdy linemen, for the Owls. Coach Woods
luis converted Paul Starnes into a guard and is exix;cted to see
plenty of action this year at that si>ot. The only tackles who have
rejjorted tlnus far are Rd Wilson and Huddy Drummond, Jack
Price and “Fatlack" Kerr, two tackles who have shown their ability
in the ])ast at Tech Hi, arc exi>ected to turn out for practice in
the near future.
The end |x).sts have ]>lenty of contenders such as Carroll \ork,
Hricc Windle, Sam Hcmby, and Hillard Knight. Two other pro-
s]x.“ctive ends who luive yet to report are Johnny Muse and Ricliard
Ciordon.
The backfield is loaded with returning l>acks, and leading the
list is Hob “Goat" Davis who is a triple threat man and the best
prosiKVt on the team. Davis has what it takes to help pull the
tJwls through a siKxessfull sea.son with the lielp of Ralph Adkins,
who also has the al>ility and experience to [Kiss, kick, and run. Dave
Forenvin, one of Central High’s old time greats is Ixick and a lot
of the load in tlie lack field will fall on his shoulders. A few
other s]>eedy backs are P)ill Hlaiikenshi]), .Allxrt Clarke, Dave
Harnett, (iib W ilson, and mayi>e Ted Decker.
■All in all, the season nviy turn out I>etter than expected if thq
lK)ys in ((uestion plus a few more prosi>ects turn up for practice,
or so go the ho|X“s of Coach Woods.

Stan Cropley of Central High hail
from University of New Mexico.
Carroll HambriRht of Tech is a
Clemson man and his-assistant,
Clipper Rocci Spadaccini. went to
Niagara.
Over at Harding Head Coach K.
P. Faulkner and Line Coach Dave
Harris are Wake Forest men.
Floyd L. Bumgarner, who coaches
the junior varsity, went to David
son.
The two CCUNC coaches, who
also help Brannin with the Cen
trals, come from different schools.
Footsie Woods went to Clemson
while Jim Taylor is a graduate of
University of Nevada.

Charlotte Center of University of
North Carolina was only a one-year
school last year, its first, and this
year the school has added a sopho
more class also, witli a larger en
rollment than last year.
As yet the team hasn't a sche
dule or its own equipment and it
uses the Central High field for its
drill field. CCUNC hopes to start
its season in October.
Woixls and Taylor have a few
holdovers from last year's squad.
Boh (Goat) Davis ts one returnee.
He's a star hack of Central fame,
once in the Shrine Bowl, and spark
of the team last year.
Bob Wylie and Leon Kendrick,
two starters in the Central line last
season, have entered CCUNC and
should be of big hc/p. Dave Barnett,
former Central star who was in the
service for a couple of years, is
back in town and at CCUNC. He
should be a lot of help in the back
field.
The Owl staff plans to schedule
games with various junior varsity
squads—from Davidson, Prsbyter-
ian, Clemson, Citadel, Catawba and
Leno'r-Rhyne.
Nearly 3(1 are out for the squad.
