Lemmon’s Acting Saves Flick By AVA NEWMAN Journal Staff Writer Take a hero so heroic that his teeth and eyes sparkle in the sunlight. Add a most dastardly, scheming villain with a curling mustache. Throw in a pinch of beauty, a sweet innocent leading lady. Combine in a old-time comedy with lots of slapstick and scenes of derring-do. What do you come up with? “The Great Race,” starring Tony Curtis Natalie Wood, and Jack Lem mon, currently playing at the Park Terrace. This satire soometimes does 'not succeed through the fault of Gilliam, McGinty Will Lead Cage Team By JIMMY PRICE Journal Sports Editor With four returnees from last seasons Dixie Intercollegiate Conference champions, the For ty-niners appear to be in good shape to strike gold again during the 1965-66 season. Leading the returnees will be two starters from last year’s team — Tommy Gilliam, a soph omore forward (6’5”) who aver aged 15 points per game and was voted “rookie of the year” in the DIAC, and Wally McGinty, a 6’4” forward who averaged 12 points per game during last season. Also returning will be Robbie Snipes who saw action as a reserve last year. The Forty-niners will be ham- nered somewhat by the first se mester intelligibility of Bobby Lemmonds, a 6’7” center whom they were depending on for re bounding strength this year. Coach Harvey Murphy who replaces Irv Edelman, last year’s DIAC “coach of the year,” feels that the conference will be much stronger this year with Lynch burg College and St. Andrews very much improved. “We have got a good chance of repeating as conference champi ons, the speed is there, and the shooting is pretty good,” Murphy said. “The boys have been working very hard, but defense is our biggest question mark.” Among the new faces Murphy is counting on are Jerry Anthony, Ronnie Payne, Jerry Lawrence, and Greg Canady. Lawrence, a 6’2” guard was voted most valuable player at Belmont High School last year and promises to be an outstanding college per former, [3 BROS, tavern! However, Jack Lemmon’s acting saves the movie in the few spots where it slips into utter banality. Lemmon’s acting throughout the whole pic ture is superb characterization and reaches heights of grandeur in the scenes where he also plays t h e tipsy, effeminate, crown prince of a mythical country in Europe. The Great Leslie (Tony Cur tis), Professor Fate (Jack Lem mon) and Maggie DuBois (Nata lie Wood) are engaged in a car race from New York to Paris. Sound impossible? Nothing is impossible in this movie. Wait until you see their method for crossing over to Siberia. This is perhaps the funniest episode of the picture. Next in preference I would take the pie-throwing episode a la Soupy Sales. This is a bit overplayed but nonetheless good for quite a few belly laughs. Miss Wood’s dresses are worth the price of admission alone, at least for the women. The other actors are dressed according to their nature. Mr. Curtis never wears anything but spotless white, whereas, Mr. Lemmon, arch-villain that he is, is always in black. Peter Falk, Jack Lemmon’s second banana deserves a good deal of praise. He is a very capable actor and plays his part of dummy to the hilt. His facial expressions, as he nonchalantly wrecks havoc on Lemmon, are priceless. Swain’s Charcoal Steak House 1800 W. Journal Staff Writer Students from low-income back ground may now have a chance at financial aid, according to Miss Mildred English, Director of Student Affairs. The University has been granted $7,682 for use during the fall semester by the College Work Study Program un der the Economic Opportunity Grant. Employment opportunities on and off campus are provided for deserving students through this program. Students are allowed to work 15 hours per week during school terms and 40 hours per week during the summer vaca tion. Most of the jobs available would be in the Atkins Library or in the Charlotte Public Library. At the present time, five stu dents are taking part in the piogram. Miss English states that there are sufficient funds for 37 additional persons. There is still time to receive aid for the fall semester. Any student carrying at least 12 semester hours and who is in good standing may apply by con tacting Miss English and filling out a Financial Aid Application.
