THE CAROLINA JOURNAtr Wednesday, Jan. S, 1966 Page Seven Cagers Seek To Increase DIAC Lead Pace Setting FoHy-Mners At Methodist Tonight FAYETTEVILLE ^ UNC at Charlotte's league leading 49ers go after their fourth straight DIAC victory here tonight against a Methodist College team they defeated 56^53 three weeks ago. In its last conference outing before the Holiday break, UNC-C subdued the Monarchs who, ten, as now, stand tallest among the five foes who seek to dethrone the champions. On Methodist’s home court, the Coach Likes Basketball Go Go’ Harvey Murphy directs UNC at Charlotte's basketball fortunes with a flair that categories h|m somewhere between Davidson’s Lefty Driesell and South Caroli na’s Frank McGuire. In other words, Murphy, the 35- year-old prize stolen from the University of Illinois’ Department of Physical Education, coaches with mild mannered exuber ance. During the course of a game he neither cavorts with Driesell’s footstomping antics not sits passively in the McGuire mannerism. This places him somewhere between the two nationally known mentors as far as sideline per sonalities is concerned. Murphy has been known to become excUed on occasion, i^tness a chair kicking episode which took place against Cok lege of Charleston. At other times, he can be as gentle as a Iamb, sitting quietly wUh legs cross and arms folded. If Murphy has a trademark, it's his “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go” directed through cupped hands toward the gymnasium floor. ’T saw Driesell do that one night at the coliseum,” says Murphy. “Apparently it must work for him, although with me I’ve been successful in only four games this season. “I didn’t realize,” he joked “that I Was yelling at the floorj though. I’ll have to start direct ing my attention to the boys.” The other side of Murphy is like the pensive manner of McGuire. It is strange that these two men should entertain calm moments, since both are redheads, but it does happen, “I like to think that if the fans see me quietly taking in the game they will believe that I am devising some extraordinary ma neuver to right any particular wrong that may be taking place.” Murphy has begun to enjoy success after five opening season setbacks. Whether he has been Driesell or McGuire is secondary to the fact that at last he has begun to win. “We’ve won four of our last five and have begun to come wound,” Murphy said. “I’m of the oi^jiion that the Improve ment will continue, especially in the second semester when Bob Lemmonds will Join the team." And with that, Murphy whooped a sbond of joy and sat ^wn to think about bow to right some more (rf those Wrongs.*’ story could be different, however. “The Monarchs,” says 49er mentor Harvey Murphy, “are too good a club to have as poor a night shooting on their own floor as they did in Charlotte. Of course, I like to think our defense had a lot to do with the fact that they made only 30 per cent of their field goal attempts (23 of 78). “As for curseives, if it hadn’t been for Wally McGinty’s scoring (22 points) and Jerry Anthony’s rebounding (li) we would have been in bad trou ble.” Bill Darden, a 6-5, 200 pound freshman, did the most damage against Charlotte and stands as Methodist’s top player. He scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to place first and second in each of the two individual Monarch categories. The steadily improving 49ers, as balanced a team as you would want to find anywhere, rate as slight favorites. While Jerry Lawrence and McGinty have continued to wow the opposition with their scoring, Anthony, Rob bie Snipes and Greg Canaday Cheerleader Carolyn Campbell demonstrates a proper winning spirit at a recent basketball game. Anthony, according to scoring and rebounding statistics, could be the team’s best, yet least recognized performer. His nine rebounds per game pace the starters as do his accuracy marks from the floor (44 per cent) and the line (77 per cent). Defensively, the 6-2 jumping jack has grown to enjoy pounding shots back into opponent’s faces. A second win over Methodist will set the stage for another encounter with Washington and Lee Saturday night in Lexing ton. UNC at Charlotte ended its pre-holiday schedule with 78-76 cilif hanger over the Generals on December 18 to lift its current overall mark to 4-6. A pair of free throws by substitute guard Ron Payne with 14 seconds remaining gave Char lotte the win. Lawrence and McGihtv each had 18 points to pace the 49ers while Anthony netted 14 and Snipes 13. With McGinty and Anthony fouling out early, what could have been an impressive double figure win, came by just two points only after Payne’s heroics. Bob Spessard looks to be the 49ers biggest worry in the return engagement as his 18 points led Washington and Lee in Charlotte. The big center’s poor perform ance from the line (4 for 13) had much to do with his team’s downfall, however. In the only game played since the last issue of The Journal, Asheville-Biltmore handed the 49ers a 94-79 set back behind Jim Baker’s 43 pdnt fireworks display. Law rence’s 26 point effort paced Charlotte, which trailed by only 64-63 before hitting a scoreless streak of five min utes late in the second half to fail out of contention. Behind Lawrence in the scoring col umn was McGinty and Snipes who each had 17 points. An thony and the Bulldogs’ Jim Zentz paced all rebounders with 11. Carolina at Charlotte’s next home game is against Florida Presbyterian on December 11, ’The Tritons feature speed and fine outside shooting in their attack. Stats Show Foity-Niners Are Better The current awakening of the UNC at Charlotte 49ers in the win column makes itself evident in the individual and team statis tics released this week by the school’s Sports Information Serv ice. While winning four of their last five games to move their mark to 4-6 overall, the 49ers have outscored their opponents 374 to 360. This figure is far better than the ridiculous 322 to 459 mark attained in the opening five games. From the field, Carolina at Charlotte has improved a 36 per cent accuracy mark to 41 per cent. With 10 games behind him, Jerry Lawrence is by far the team's outstanding scorer. His 20.2 point per game average leads Wally McGinty’s 16.1 average by 41 points. McGinty is also second in rebounding, trailing Jerry An thony 9.0 to 8.1. Anthony also has the lead in the field goal ac curacy department with a 44 per cent mark. Reserve Truett Wood’s 17 for 20 performance from the tree throw line nets him that team distinction at an outstanding 85 per cent. Name G FGA FGM Pet. FTA FTM PCT. PF Avg. ’TP Avg. Rev.
