C-C Team Readies For Competion The infant cross country team is speedily working into shape this week in preparation for this Fri day’s three-way meet witli St. Andrews and College of Charleston in Laurinburg. Just organized this year, tlie team has only been practicing to gether since September 15. The eight-man team consists of basketballers RobbieSnipes, Jerry Antliony, and Ron Payne, plus Lynn Griffin and freshmen John Laf- ferty, Mike Ridge, Bill Weatherly, and Bucky Weston. “The team is in pretty good shape considering the tact that we have had so very little time to practice,’’ said Coach Harvey Murphy. “The boys’ attitude is excellent.’’ John Lafferty and Mike Ridge will probably pace the Forty- Niners, according to Coach Mur- -phy. “They have experience and they run with a long stride like cross country men should,’’ he said. Both Lafferty and Ridge are freshmen and both ran cross country in high school. Lafferty at tended high school in Tennessee, while Ridge spent hisyounger days jogging inaGaringerlligh uniform. The Forty - Xiners have been working out in tlie strip of campus between highway 49 and the lake. They have been doing fast, short- distance runs, terrain work, and long-distance runs. Tuesday tlie Charlotte squad ran the 2 1/4 mile Freedom Park track twice. Coach Murphy feels that by the end of October tlie team will be tunning about 10 miles a day. ,\fter a light workout on Thurs day, the Forly-Xiners will leave Friday tor Laurinburg and their first encounter with opposition. Commenting on tlie sprinters’ chances. Coach Murphy said, “St. Andrews has had a cross country team for a number of years and it practices tlie year round. 1 im agine they will be hard to beat. “On the other hand,’’ he con tinued, “Charleston’s team is about as inexperienced as ours.
