WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1966 THE CAROLINA JOURNAL PAGE 4 Jerry Anthony flaps his wings and does the bird -while othe team members watch for a rebound. Meadowlark Lemon. Would you believe Bill Redmond? Cogers Can Clean The Boards BY DONNA HUGHES Now that basketball practice is well under way, a progress re port on the team is in order. A- ccording to Coach Harvey Murphy, the team is “far” from being in good enough condition to play a game. The squad has lost two boys, Ronnie Payne and Nick Stavrakas, because the game interfered with their academic work. However, things are beginning to take shape despite this diff iculty. “I am beginning to get an idea of who will be starters, but there should be a close battle for several positions,” Coach Murphy said. He related that “If the team were playing a game tonight the start ers would be Don Keel and Jerry Anthony, forwards; Bob Lemm- onds, center; and Bill Redmond and Robbie Snipes, guards. Eddie Goodall could very well be a start er, either at forward or guard position, by the time of the first ball game. “Jerry Harris and Lane Lure will be strong contenders once they have attained a much higher level of conditioning. They have both been away from the game for a couple of years, and thus were behind the other boys at the beginning of the season,” the coach explained. Bridge^ Bowling Become Big Here BY BOBBE BERRY Duplicate Bridge is fast becom ing one of the most popular act ivities on the campus. Under the direction of Jay Keenan, approx imately fifteen students are learn ing the game while the experi enced players on campus such as Jay Eaker, Larry Myer, Connie Vincent, and Tommy Thomas are enjoying this opportunity to play the game. New players, including Wanda Gordon, John Canipe, Ann Mash- burn, Corny StUwell, and Doug MiUer have found Duplicate Bri dge to be fascinating and look forward to the weekly Thursday afternoon sessions. Mr. Keenan is eager for more players to join this group of stu dents and he invites anyone with an interest in bridge to join them on Thursday afternoons at 2:30. Intramural bowling has been a termendous success as far as stu dent enjoyment goes; however, the participation has been limited to a handful of enthusiastic bowlers. Sally Hagood, PhylUs Henline, Jack Davis, Libby Holshouser, Ken Imes, and John Gaither are a few of the students who have been improving their bowling scores and having a baU at the same time. Coach Murphy said that the “brigh test spot so far is rebounding, as expected. Six foot seven inch Bob Lemmonds, six foot five inch Don Keel, and jumping jacks Jerry Anthony, Eddie Goodall and Rob bie Snipes are producing very strong board work. The addition of Ben Basinger, another jump ing jack, will add even more re bounding strength second semes ter.” “1 would say at this time we are better than when we played our first game of the 1965-1966 season,” he remarked. “We do not shoot as weU, but we are better in every other phase of the game and are much better balanced.” Coach Murphy concluded by say ing that a good manager would improve the team “tremedously”. He asked anyone interested in this position to contact him. but they would like to see more students take advantage of this op portunity to bowl on Tuesday af ternoons at 4:00 at North 29 Bow ling Lanes. Originally the plans had been to form standing leagues but this plan has been discarded in order to give more students the chance to bowl if they cannot participate every week but would still like to occasionally.
