m I PAGE 4 THE CAROLINA JOURNAL WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 7, 1966 Charlotte Drops 2 To Virginia Hardwooders The Forty - Niners hit the road for Virginia and two basketball games over the weekend and lost twice to north - or - the - boarder opponents. Charlotte fell Friday to Lynchburg College, 97-64, while Saturday saw the invaders from the south overhauled by Washing ton and Lee University, 107-85. Lynchburg, led by fantastic Wayne Proffitt, jumped off to a commanding early lead and was never headed by the Charlotte squad. Proffitt, who set Virginia college scoring records against the Forty-Niners iast year with 51 and 68 point productions, had a bad night in collecting only 28. Proffitt led in scoring for the game and was backed up by team mates Pugh with 14 and Guill with 10. Lane Hurley led Charlotte by dumping in 17 and he received as sistance from Jerry Anthony,'15. “It was bad.” That’s how Bobby Lemmonds summed up his team’s performance against the Hornets of the coast city’s college. Coach Murphy agreed with his giant center. “We didn’t play well at all,” he lamented. Only Hur ley and Keel looked good,” he said. “We held Proffitt to 28,” he added, “But everybody else kept pouring them in all over the place. Still, we should be able to give them a good game when they come down here,” he said. Saturday at Lexington, Virginia, Washington and Lee’s Indians scalped the Forty-Niners and turn ed their pale faces a bright crim son hue, 107-85. This game saw Charlotte’s ch arges spot W & L a 54 - 35 half time lead and then come roaring back in the last 20 min utes. Bobby Lemmonds and Jerry Anthony spearheaded the big push. They finished with 21 and 16 point totals, respectively. The almost impossible come back attempt was doomed, however, when Lane Hurley and Robbie Snipes fouled out. This caused the already out-manned Forty-Niners to play the last five minutes with just four men on the court since Don Keel and Gordon Barrett were suffering from knee Anthony, Lemmonds, Eddie Goodall, and Bill Redmond finish ed the game for the enervated Rounders Return Ready Skitders Compile Commendable Card The bowling team, which goes against College of Charleston in a postal match at North 29 Lanes today at 3; 30, has proved to be the first winning atheletic team on campus this year. As of today’s match, the pinballers’ record is a respectable 4-4. 'Ihe skittlers, paced by Mitch Borden with a 173 average, open ed the season against N. C. Wes leyan on November 23 and grabbed three of four matches. Then, on November 30, six team members traveled to Laurinburg to take on St. Andrews. Proving to be less effective on the road, the Forty-Niners dropped three matches to St. Andrews, while winning only one. Mr. Woodruff commented that the program is “light and easy to listen to.” Students and faculty are cor dially invited to attend and enjoy one or both of tlie presentations. Bill Crenshaw and James Coop er lend depth to the squad with 169 averages, only 4 behind leader Borden. Harry Griffin is just a frog’s hair behind these two with a 168 overall. Ken Imes pushes Griffin hard for fourth spot on the team since he sports a 165 average. Swain’s Charcoal Steak House 1800 W. Mereheod St. RESERVATIONS: 332-2414 RECORD CITY DISCOUNT 105 W. Virginia Box Scores Lynchburg Box Score: The embattled Forty - Niners return to the friendly confines of Garinger’s gym tonight to do battle with Dixie Conference foe and ri val, N. C. MethodistCollege. When the ball is tipped into play at 8 p.m., Charlotte will be going all out for its first victory of the season. It the Gold Diggers get a good start and enjoy a fruitful first half, the chances of attaining that first win will be great. This is be cause Charlotte has been a proven to be a second - haK ball club in its first five encounters this season. Bobby Lemmonds, who scored 21 points against Washington and Lee Saturday, said, “I just can’t understand it. We just can’t seem to get tired up until the second half. I don’t know what it is, but we’ve been trying for the whole game and we’ll be trying the whole time Wednesday night.” Coach Harvey Murphy said that if the team can conquer two of its most haunting defects, ball handling mistakes and a poor cho ice of shots, tonight’s contest will belong to Charlotte. Coach indicated the sqaud would be working hard up to today and would be ready tonight. After tonight’s encounter, the Forty - Niners will travel to Laurinburg to meet St. Andrews in a conference tilt Saturday night. The team returns home again next Tuesday to test N. C.
