Charlotte
BY JOHN LAFFERTY
Charlotte was outmanned and
outclassed 108-60 by Belmont Ab
bey, Saturday night, Feb. 4.
Belmont jumped to a quick 7-0
lead in the first five minutes of
the game. Then Charlotte began to
come alive, and held the margin
to less than 10 points until the
final minutes of the half, when
Abbey took advantage of five turn
overs, and went into haK time with
a 47-25 lead.
The -•'cond half went worse for
the struggling Charlotte team.
Abbey opened with an entirely
new team, which ran circles around
the 49ers. Although Charlotte ap
peared to be playing one of their
best second halves, in as far as
team effort went, it could not keep
pace with a far superior opponent.
Dennis Bagley, of Belmont led
all scorers, with 18 points.
Charlotte was led by Ben Bas
inger and Lane Hurley, who hit
for 16 and 14 respectively. Bas
inger played especially well on de
fense. Both he and Hurley have
been greatly overlooked through
out the season in their defensive
play.
Although the team lost badly,
they demonstrated a spirit which
will give them a great advantage

ference decision from N. C. Metho
dist.
The 49ers were hard hit by in
juries in a game described by
Redmond as, “one of the rough
est games 1 have ever played in.”
With only five minutes gone in
the game. Bob Lemmond suffered
a cut over his eye, and was un
able to return to action, Jerry
Overcash was aiso dazed, but he
was able to come back into the
game also.
In the first half, Charlotte took
an early lead. When Methodist be
gan to gain. Snipes and Redmond
began to hit on the shots that
counted, and held the Forty-Niners
in the game. Charlotte took a
28-27 advantage into the half.
In the second half, the Forty-
Niners well down by six points,
with two minutes left in the game.
Basinger hit on two shots, and Red
mond on one to tie the score at
63 points. In the final minute
Overcash stole the ball andpassed
in to Stravakas, who missed a
shot. Snipes took the rebound, and
with two seconds left scored, to
give the winning margin.
After Lemmond left the game,
Charlotte played at a great height
disadvantage. As a result, they got
very few rebounds, and were also
forced to take all of their shots
from outside.
Scoring honors were taken by
Bill Darden and Bill Honeycutt of
Methodist, who had 18 points
apiece. Redmond led Charlotte with
17, followed by Snipes and Bas
inger with 15. In shooting, the 49ers

The basketball team came alive
n the second half to defeat
College of Charleston in a Dixie
Conference game Friday night,
Feburary 3. With five men scor
ing in double figures, led by Bob
Lemmond’s 24 points, the Forty-
Niners came from 39-33 halftime
deficit to a 74-61 victory.
Charleston took an early lead
during the first half, but was un
able to keep the momentum up.
Only the outstanding performances
of Lemmond and Snipes kept the
49ers in the game during the early
going.
In the second half, Charlotte
took the offensive, and began to
capitalize on the cold streeik which
hit Charleston. Lemmond, Hurley
and Redmond led the attack which
placed tlie Forty-Niners in firm
control of the ball game six min
utes into the second half.

The roundballers were com
pletely overpowered by Florida
Presbyterian, 89 to 56, in a Jan
uary 10th tilt held in the Garin
ger gym.
The teams played even baU for
the first four minutes. Then, Char
lotte efforts became unproductive,
and Florida widened the gap to a
47-27 half time advantage.
The second half, which at times
became a veritable comedy of
errors, was even worse. The
Forty - Niners shot an icy 10
for 40 from the floor, and com
plimented the performance by los
ing any control of the backboards
they might have possessed in the
first half.
In regard to the loss. Coach Mur
phy stated that Presbyterian was,
“one of the most outstanding teams
we have played. No one else re
bounds as well as they do. We
played poorly, but this can be dis
counted by the quality of the op
position. They deserved the win.”
Florida’s Harry Singletary, who
led all scorers with 18 points,
and Doug Clements who added 16
with an unstopable outside shot
helped to convince any disbelieve-
ing Charlotte player of the Florida
right to victory. If this wasn’t
enough, three other Florida men
hit double figures.
Charlotte was led by Lane Hur
ley with 14 points. Don Keel, hav
ing one of his best nights, added
12, and Bill Redmond hit for 10.
Otherwise, it was an off night
for the team. Snipes could manage
only 5 points before fouling out
mid way through the second half,
and Lemmond was held to 6 points,
ill coming on free throws.
