CABOLINA JOURNAL April 5, 1967 Page 5 Charlotte Thinclads Shock Strong St. Andrews BY JOHN LAFFERTY The ■ track team completed in its first conference meet Monday, March 27, against St. Andrews in Laurenburg. St. Andrews, which finished sec ond by one point in the 1966 DIAC tournament, defeated the Forty-Niners 74 to 32, but was shocked by some of the opposi tion they met. The Forty-Niners took three first places to the Knights’ thir teen. Maurice McClettie opened with a 19’ 11 1/2” leap in the broad jump. Larry McAfee came from 15 yards behind in the 880 yard run to beat one of the top runners in the conference, and finished 2:03.4, one tenth of a second off of the DIAC record. The mile relay team, in the last even of the meet pulled an upset victory over the record holding, and 1966 championship team with a time of 3:40.8. Woody Frick opened, ran even with his man, and handed off to McClettie who feU behind, but regained his lost distance before passing the baton to Larry McMee. McAfee gave the Charlotte its first narrow lead, and handed off to John Lafferty, who held the lead, and finished two second ahead of St. Andrews. Charlotte added five second place finishes. Ben Basinger led with a 5 ft. 6 inch high jump. Lafferty had a 5:00 mile, Mike Ridge had a 10:57 two mile, and Harold Cohen placed second in both the 120 yd. high and 330 yd. low hurdles. In the 330 yd. lows, he missed first only by four tenths of one second, because of a stum ble on the final hurdle. Both were Dixie Con- terence matches. “I can readily understand why St. Andrews is first in the con ference,” said Coach William Walker. “They have a lot of depth and are experienced because they have already played several mat ches tills season.” The team showed a “good bit if improvement” in the match witli College of Charleston, he said, ‘especially due to the efforts of ipencer Edwards who played well or us.” There have been several last minute additions to the underman- led tennis sguad, including Joe Wilson and Ronnie Payne. 1 really expect a lot from Ronnie,” Wallver explained, “be cause he works hard and has a lot of ability and hustle,” The fuzzballers’ next match will be April 7 with Pembroke. The Maroon’s returning letter- men proved to much for the Forty- Niners who have only 2 returnees on the squad. The golfers were beaten by what Rick Holt called, “ A real good and experienced golf team.” They are currently leading the confer ence standings. Mike Thomas, John McQuay, Sam Rankin, and Frank Hallman were all blanked by their men in the match. Rick Holt picked up a point in his match by bettering his man on the back nine. Dave Cotter rounded out the Charlotte scoring by tying his opponent on the back. Commented Captain Dave Cot ter, who had a 79 to lead the team, “we need four men who can break 80.” Interested golfers are urged to contact Dave Cotter or Rick Holt. Added David, “We’re hurting for 70 shooters,”
