■ CAROLINA JOURNAL APRIL 19, 1967 PAGE 7 Thinclads Place Against Lynchburg, Wingate Conference Meet Coming by JOHN LAFFERTY The 49ers ran against Lynch- burgh College in their sixth meet of the season, April 12. The meet featured the showdown between the top 880 runners, and the top Mile relay teams in the conference. In the 880, the lead changed seven times in the first 660 yards. Larry McAfee then passed Lynch burg’s Yudowitch, defending con ference champion, and won by about a yard, in 2:02.5, over one second slower than his unofficial confer ence record. The mile relay was much the same. Charlotte took an early lead on Harold Cohen’s first leg. McClettie Fell behind, but later regained some of the distance, be fore handing off to McAfee, who ran five yards behind his man, Lafferty, anchor man for the team, caught up, but wasn’t able to pass Lynchburg’s final man. Lynchburg won in 3:39.s, and Charlotte fin ished in 3:40. Another standout performance in the meet came from Maurice Mc Clettie who passed three men in the last 150 yards to win the 440 yard dash in school record time of :54,0. Harold Cohen captured UNC- C’s only first in the 330 yd. low hurdles, in 45.9, and missed a first in the highs only because he lost his glasses, was unable to see the final hurdle, and did a forward roll over it, breaking it. He was second in the event. In the mile run, Mike Ridge and John Lafferty finished 2nd and 3rd, in 4:53.1 and 4:55. Ridge was also 2nd in the two mile run. Ben Chavis took thirds in the 100 yd. dash, in :10.6, and in the 220 in :24.0, both school re cords. In the field events, McClettie placed third in the Broad jump. Steve Bolt was second in the Shot, Harold Cohen Blurs The Film With His Speed On The Hurdles. throwing it 35’ 7”. He also took a second in the Javelin, with 106’ 4”, and a unique, unorthodixform. Joe Biron learned how to triple jump, and then took a second place, with 37’ 8”. He was only six in ches away from first, and had a jump well over 38 feet, on which he scratched. The final score was Lynchburg 90, UNC-C 37. “Lynchburg is one of the strong est teams in the conference. Our showing against them indicates we will be a factor in the conference meet on May 1. We were very disappointed in some events, es pecially the mile relay, but we feel we can make up tor these errors.’’ These are some of Coach Steele’s comments following the meet. Wingate Defeats As 49ers Charge There are only three meets be fore the conference meet; Monday at Davidson, Saturday, April 22 for the Davidson relays, and the fol lowing Thursday, at Davidson. BY JOHN LAFFERTY Cliff Lau Wields Wicked Foil _ Whips 3 Of 5 I In State Meet Kwan Pang “Cliff” Lau, the mainstay of the fencing team, did well in the N. C. A. F. L. fencing meet on Saturday, April 8 on the Raleigh campus. Nineteen people entered the foil event of the fencing championship in the State individual matches. Cliff had to face five opponents, and beat three of the five. His first opponent beat him and went on to win the individual title. He also lost to his second foe, the captain of the N. C. State fencing team. The last three opponents were not as fortunate, and succumbed to Cliff’s blade in 5-2, 5-1, 5-0 fashion. Unlike the fiberglass foils used by our team in practice, electric monitored foils were used in the tournament and are about twice as heavy as the glass weapons. Cliff is originally from Northern China, but lived in Taiwan after 1949. He attended high school in Hong Cong and there became in terested in a fencing club which was instructed by the Fencing Champion of Hong Cong. As he says, “Fencing helps build self poise, rythymn, mental alter- tness and speed.” Cliff was part of the team which surprised other colleges by appearing in the championship and placing. Hopefully, there is a bright future for the fencing team. The club received its charter on April 12 of this year, and is now in official competition represent ing the school. Wingate College carried a 53-9 advantage gained in the field events to a 88-55 victory over UNC-C Monday afternoon, April 10, even though the 49ers took firsts in six of the ten running events, and outscored the host team 46 to 35. Ben Bassinger and Larry McAfee were outstanding for Char lotte. Bassinger competeted in six events, placing in five, while McAfee finished first in three events. In the field events, a weak point for the team, Maurice McClettie placed third in the broad jump, with 19’ 6”, Bassinger took second in the high jump, at 5’ 6”, se cond in the triple jump, with a school record 34’ 9”, third in the discus with a school record toss of 102’ 9”, and third in the javelin, with another school record of 138’ 5”. Charlotte began to. pick up in the track events. Todd Brabson, Ben Chavis, Maurice McClettie and Terry Whitt took the 440 relay in :48.2. Mike Ridge was second, and John Lafferty third in the mile run, Harold Cohen was first in both the 120 high hurdles and the 440 yd. lows, with school records in both. He finished the highs in :17.0, and the lows in :63.0. In the 440 yd. dash McClettie took first in :55.3 and Lafferty was second in :55.6. McClettie’s time was a school record. Brab son was third in the 100 yd. dash in :11.1, and Larry McAfee easily placed first in the 880. McAfee also tied for first in the 220 yd. cash, in 24.6. Ridge was second in the two mile run. The mile relay team took an easy first, with a slow 3:44.3. According to Coach Steele, the team gave away a lot of points, and the field events hurt the show ing, but overall it was a real team effort. Track Records Cliff Lau. His name, Lau Kwan Pang in his native language, appears above. “There is a great potential for a first fencing club at this school. I’m sure if these people practice continuously, UNC-C will have a standard fencing ream,” added Cliff. Dr. Slechta, club sponsor, and Dr. Murphy have helped to make the organization of the club iS possible. %-:• EVENT RECORD & DATE BY ; 100 yd dash :10.6(4/12/67) Chavis i 220 yd dash :24.0(4/12/67) Chavis ; 440 yd dash :54.(X4/12/67) McClettie ; 880 yd dash 2:01.1(4/7/67) McAfee ■ Mile run 4:53.1(4/12/67) Ridge ; 2 mile run 10:51.5(4/12/67) Ridge 440 relay :48.1(4/12/67) Chavis,Parker, McClettie, McAfee Mile relay 3:38.0(4/5/67) Frick, McClettie, McAfee, Lafferty 120 high hurdles :17.0(4/10/67) Cohen 330 inter, hurdles ;44.2(4/7/67) Cohen 440 inter, hurdles :63.0(4/10/67) Cohen High jump 5’ 6”(3/27/67) Bassinger Broad jump 19’ 11 l/2”(3/27/67) McClettie Triple jump 37’ 8”(4/12/67) Biron Shot put 35’ 7”(4/12/67) Bolt Discus Throw 102’ 9”(4/10/67) Bassinger Javelin 138’ 5”(4/10/67) Bassinger
