p PAGE 4 Cheerleaders Newly Chosen By ANN McNUTT The four vacant positions nec essary to complete this year’s cheerleader squad were filled last Wednesday in a general election. Joining the returning cheer leaders, Carolyn Campbell, JuUa Lonon, Terry Westerfield, and Pat McNeeley, are as follows: Louise Napolitano, a sophomore; Linda Craven, Joy McKinney, and Jerry Westburg, freshmen. Selecting the four from a field of approximately forty hopefuls was the task given to a six mem ber election board. Members of this board were; Dr. Harvey Mur phy, basketball and cross-country coach; Mr. Paul Fleming, wrest ling and golf coach; Mrs. Dorothy Dunn, faculty member; Robbie Snipes and Jerry Anthony, co captains of the basketball team, and John Gaither, president of the Student Body, Miss Mildred Eng lish, advisor to the cheerleaders, chose the faculty members to be on the election committee. To make sure that the empty positions would be filled, a change was made in the guide iines, mak ing it possible for entering fresh men to be eligible to go out for cheerleader. Previously, the selection of the cheering squad was made during the second week in May, thus limiting the posi tions to students who were return ing the next year. This year, how ever, some of the positions were vacated over the summer, making it necessary to chose new ones. The new cheerieaders wili re ceive sweaters, megaphones, and letters to use during the year from the Student Govemment. They will also receive, as do the rest of the cheerleaders, money from the Stu dent Government for traveling ex penses and publicity needs. The club emphasis will be placed on the sharing of political ideas. “We do not feel that enough attention was given on this cam pus to the sharing of political ideas last year,” comments the group’s acting president Rick Dancy. The YRC seeks to promote an accessible form for the students of UNC-C to air their political opinions. They also plan to pro vide a wide range of political speakers and prc^ams with party affiliation being no barrier. Mr. Dancy continues by saying, “The YRC has been insistent in its at tempt to guarantee that students, no matter what there ideological leanings, will not be set apart from any discussion, although most members of the groifl) have de finite ideological opinions.” Dancy was very quick to set the YRC apart from other such organizations. “We are a little different from most political groups in that we are not dog matic with regard to vague po litical principles,” he says. Today and Thursday the YRC is sponsoring ?. membership drive for all interested students. Watch For...
