Very seldom does a n album come out with the number of really good songs that are found in “Another Shade of Lana”. Albim bands include — “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby”, “Walk Away , “Two for the Road”, “The House of the Rising Sun”, ^d others. Two of the most popular are songs from the French- tonguage film, “A Man and a Woman” — “Love Is Stronger Far Than We” and “The Shadows of Our Love”. Even an old Shirley Temple tune, “On the Good Ship Lollipop”, is made appealing by Lana Cantrell. An ejqjlosive drama peopled with vivid characters, striking locales and suspense-packed situations, MGM’s “Point Blank” stars Aca demy Award-winner Lee Marvin in another unforgettable portrayal to follow his triumphantperformance in “The Dirty Dozen”. With him in the new picture are Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Carrol O’Connor, Lloyd Bochner and Michael Strong, together with John Vernon and Sharon Acker, two of Canada’s leading stars m^ing their Hollywood film debuts. The story of “Point Blank” concerns a wronged man relent lessly tracking down a woman, a man and the members of a crime syndicate who have betrayed and robbed him. Motivated by the determination to recover the fortune that was hi jacked from him at Alcatraz two years previously. Walker (Lee Marvin) is willing to risk the life he almost lost through the trea chery of his wife, Lynne (Sharon Acker), and is partner, Reese (John Vernon). Through their be trayal, Walker had been left for dead and abandoned on the prison island of Alcatraz. But he isn’t dead and through a series of circumstances, he re turns to the now deserted fortress to meet the mysterious Yost (Keenan Wynn), who is aware that Walker wants revenge as well as the money that was stolen from him. The events that follow are per meated with spine-tingling sus pense and action as Walker traps both Lynne and Reese and, ironi cally, finds himself in love with his wife’s sister, Chris (Angie Dickinson). It is the latter who aids him in unmasking the lead ers of the deadly “Organization,” who stop at nothing in their efforts to liquidate Walker. Walker is beant on systema tically killing off every syndicate leader responsible for the injustice to him. During his quest Walker /.cc I^Jari'in JtntJs his ivife^ Sharon Ackcr^ a snicltle in ttnc of the gripping scenes of MGM's “Point fllanh," esplosire drama of a man who pits his cunning against a deadly crime syndicate. fights off two thugs from the or ganization in a battle that takes place behind the scenes of a psy chedelic nightclub where the noise is such that customers never realize a fight is going on. Walker also performs such tasks as throw ing a nude syndicate leader from the roof of theorganization’spent- house. He wrecks an expensive convertible with a syndicate big man in the car in order to make the crime boss talk. Walker accomplishes this by driving back and forth between support columns of a Los Angeles freeway. In the story’s tense climax. Walker is given an opportunity to retrieve his fortune, barely ten feet away, but within gun-sight of the killers. Walker is faced with the gamble of risking both his life and that of Chris. He has spent an entire movie trying to bet back his $93,000. Does Walker accept the gamble? ^Odd Couple’ Is Male Love By MONTE ZEPEDA Zepeda Answers Critics By MONTE ZEPEDA (Second Of A Serien) My article of Oct. 18, in this paper brought quite a harsh re action from the management of radio station WAYS. Much of their concern centered around a state ment made in reference to their disc jockeys. That statement read as follows, “The disc jockeys are refugees from a mental hospital.” The wording of this sentence was an error made by our printing company. It should have read, “The disc jockeys sound like re fugees from a mental hospital.” Should anyone question the authen ticity of my story concerning the printer’s error, this paper’s editor can substantiate my statement. However, getting back to the criticism of the announcers, the disc jockeys do give performances on WAYS that cause listeners to question whether or not the an nouncers sound sane. In a recent newspaper article, a Charlotte reporter had this to say. ‘ ‘Long John (Silver, a WAYS announcer) at work is awesome to watch; frightening, in a subtle way. 11 takes a bottomless ego, gal vanic hypertension and a nice balance of drive and madness to ( Continued on page 4) “The Odd Couple”, latest pro duction by the Pineville Country Dinner Theatre, is a sort of mas culine love story. There is a fellow, Felix (Nicky Carle), who is so impossibly meticulous and such a frustrated housewife at heart, that his wife chases him into the street. She is so very glad to be rid of the past that the only problem about Felix leaving is what color to paint his room after he’s out. After wandering around the streets for a day and half a night, Felix turns up at his best friend’s apartment. The friend, Oscar (Frank Cascio), has heard about Felix’s problems and has learned of Felix’s suicide drive. To make sure that Felix has no opportunity to follow through with his plans, Oscar lets him move into the eight-room apartment that he pre viously shared with his wife and family before his wife obtained a divorce. Moving into his pal* s apartment, Felix makes life a nightmare with neatness and order. Felix con stantly cleans and fusses over the apartment. He even goes so far as to disinfect the playing cards used in the weekly poker game. Between cooking, cleaning and crying — he succeeds finally in getting bounced by his bene factor. The story is just that simple. But with the playwright’s mag nificent flair for the wold riposte, this simple plot becomes a mad rigadoon which should really be a man-and-wife comedy but is instead the story of two guys, quite normal, who are utterly un able to live with one another. Many of the funniest lines are exactly those that would be spo ken by a husband and wife in the heat of a family argument. The final confrontation scene between the two is a masterpiece. Nicky Carle, who plays Felix, is quite an accomplished actor. His previous credits include acting roles in both television and movies, producing and directing plays, de signing costumes for productions, and singing appearances with dance bands throughout the country. Carle portrays Felix in a very expert manner. His mannerisms and diction prove to add to the realixm that makes his perfor mance most convincing. Frank Cascio (Oscar) also has numerous theatrical and television appearances to his credit. In this production he shows himself to be true professional with his portrayal of the man who takes in a thoroughly irritating person but puts up with him to spare his guest’s feelings. While the plot may not be the most complicated, the execution of the story proves to be most entertaining.
