Carson Opposes Regional University Bill_ Tells Yonng Repnblicans Why By; RON FOSTER “I find college students much more astute and alert than any other type of audience,” said James Carson, as he began his talk to the UNC-C Young Re publicans. Mr. Carson, one of the seven Mecklenburg representatives to the N. C. Legislature, spoke on “The Regional University and Its Effect on UNC-C.” He also discussed various other issues of concern to North Carolinians such as the one per cent sales tax and the speaker-ban law. Mr. Carson described the re gional university bill as “the flag to rally around for the eas tern Democrats after Dr. I. Bev erly Lake was appointed to the N.C. Supreme Court by Gover nor Moore.” According to Carson, East Carolina, Western Carolina, Ap palachian, and N. C. A & T., Speaks Here Dr. J. H. Gibbons, atomic phy sicist at Oak Ridge National In stitute in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will speak today in the Par quet Room at 11:30 a.m. His topic will concern the pro blems posed by the population in creases in recent years. He was quick to point out, how ever, that it is just a matter of time before these institutions will be requesting the right to issue doctorates. Presently the regional uni versities are being investigated by the Board of Higher Edu cation which will submit a re port. to the N. C. legislature in August of 1968. He also pointed out that ori ginally the regional university bill only had provisions for East Carolina. Western Carolina, Ap palachian, and North Carolina A. & T. were added to gain support from western legislators. , Mr. Carson opposed the re gional university bill by con tending that the consolidated uni versity should be the main source of doctorates. It is estimated that the one per cent sales tax will take in 6.2 million dollars per year. He also expressed discontent with the North Carolina speaker ban law.
