PAGE 8 Petition Signed (continued from page 1) student body. Mr. Billups was quoted as saying, “It is the right of the Publications Board to place these restrictions on student publications.” As of this writing there are approximately 600 signatures on the petition. The goal of the pet itioners is 1,000 signatures. Rick Dancy, former editor of the Carolina Journal, had this to say about the recent decision handed down by the Publications Board, “I think it is the most stupid thing I have ever heard of. I also feel that this institution has long since passed the point where any one male or female can effectively run it. It must be a cooperative and well- coordinated venture if we are ever going to truly make the transition from small junior col lege to a full-fledged univer sity. I think that one of the best ways to determine when a col lege begins its maturation pro cess to true university status is by judging the quality of its student publication. By publi cation I mean publications con ceived by the students and in tended to be read by the stu dents and by the degree of res ponsibility accorded to the stu dents who publish it.” “The type of administrative censorship we are now faced with can spell the doom of qua lity student publications,” Mr. Dancy continues. The petition is expected to be presented at tomorrow’s meet ing of the Publications Board. If no satisfactory decision is agreed upon by the Board, the final result rests in the hands of Chancellor D. W. Colvard. Mr. Brenton Steele, Director of the Union, endorses the petition which protests the limitations placed on student publications by the Publications Board.
