A fitting end for a good season? BY ROD SMITH The intramural “All Stars” met the league champion Animals in a classic touch football game on November 28. The “Stars” were elected by the players in the league and consist of the following: Eddie Goodall, Darryl Seism, George Lloyd, Dave Tay lor, Norman Scott, Richard Mc- Cotter, Jerry Overcash, Tal Phillips, Louis Thom, H. B. Wat son, Lee Atkins, Ben Chavis, Ron Basinger, C. N. Cunningham, Larry Geddings, and captain David Corey. The game was a hard-fought comedy of errors. The first half, scoreless and filled with inter ceptions, ended in a sub-freezing stalemate. “The Play” of the first half was a multiple-injury affair with three men going dovra, two of them for the count. The “Stars” almost scored on a be autiful pass from Norman Scott to David Corey deep in Animal territory, but were unable to capitalize and score. The second half of play was more indicative of the type of play that has characterized the entire season. The undefeated Animals scored early on a pass from Weston to Whitt to Rivers. They scored again on the fluke play of the season. Scott of the “Stars” mistook Weston tor one of his own players and threw him the ball deep in “Star” terri tory. Weston calmly trotted into the end zone. The Animals failed to convert either extra point at tempt and the “Stars” roared back to score on a pass from GoodaU to Seism late in the game. The extra point was good on a pass. An outside kick attempt failed, but the Animals could not move and Mims was forced to punt. The *^Stars” tried desperately for a comeback but failed as Uie game ended in a Pat Queen interception of a pass. The first half was a touch-and- go affair that ended with the 49’ers ahead 29-28, by virtue of Gary Cress’ hot hand. Cress cooled off the second half, but Anthony, Snipes, and Lemmond took upthe slack. Wes leyan got hot at the beginning of the second half, but the 49’ers fought back and took a 12 point lead with twelve minutes left in the game on the scoring ofSnipes and the rebounding of Donahue. Then Wesleyan ripped off 12 consecutive points. With 7:35re maining the score read 51-49 in favor of Charlotte. The game continued evenly until, with 59 seconds showing on the clock, Wesleyan pulled ahead, 71-69. Price of Wesleyan forced Anthony into a jump situation under the 49’ers basket. The 74 point margin is indicative of the evenness with which the two teams were matched. Dean Smith’s Tar Heels look tougher this year than ever before. But can they take Dook (Golden and Lewis) and South Carolina (Thompson, Har- like, Gregor, and Standard) ? And, if so, how do the Tar Heels compare with the likes of David son, Houston, Louisville, Van derbilt, Kansas, Boston Col lege, and of course, mighty ucla/ Thus far, who can say? In an attempt to give answers to at least some of these ques tions, several UNC-Chapel Hill students, under the leadership of former Journal staffer and present Daily Tar Heel sports editor Larry Keith, have pub lished a 16-page report on the Chap>el Hill roundballers in news paper form. The Quakers continued to run away with the action, as Coach Murphy substituted, vainly trying to slow them down. But for the luckless 49ers, the baskets seemed closed. The first half ended with Charlotte on the short end of an 18-67 score, having shot only 17% in the first half. Early in the second half, Guil ford coach. Jack Steele, began to pull his starters, and UNC- C’s B. bailers were better able to run with the Quaker second unit. Nevertheless, the damage had been done, by the likes of All-American Bob Kauffman who was high scorer with 25 points, and top rebounder with 14. Cliff- ton Whitaker added 14, as did Ed Fellers, while Pat Moriarty finished with 24. Jerry Anthony played a tre mendous defensive game, and also tied with Ben Basinger tor scoring honors, with 12 apiece. Gary Cress added 11, and Bob Lemmond had 7. Reid Carter came into the game late, but endeared him self to 49er fans forever. With a slow set shot from the outside, he hit for his only two points of the game. Later, he fed the ball to Jerry Anthony under the basket, as Jerry went up for two points. Not bad for the shortest man on the squad.
