The slick ball handling and superior shooting of the Vikings did enough damage in the first half to doom the 49’ers, shooting a cook 55 per cent from the floor and dominating the boards. Berry went bright spot, scoring 15 points and pulling down 8 rebounds. The 49’ers came alive in the second half, hitting 18 for 39 from the floor and matching Berry’s out-put of forty-nine points. Snipes and Anthony both hit tor 15 points in the second half, while Donahue scored 9 and Lemmond 8. The Vikings finished with a 49 per cent statistic on field goals with out ahead 58-24 in the first half and were never challenged again. Behind the shooting of Price and Johnson, the smooth operating Berry offense ran the 49’ers to Price taking scoring honors with 23 points, followed by Johnson (15), Godfry (14), Davis (13), Worley (12), Powell (11), Hatcher (10), and Templin (6). Freshman Gary Cress came off the bench vrith a hot hand last Friday night to lead the 49ers to their first win of the season, an 88-84 triumph over the round ballers from the Greensboro cam pus ofthe University. Cress poured in 26 points for the home team, the highest point total for a 49er thus far this season. The 49ers took an early 11-3 lead and then foiight an even bat tle with the visiting Spartans for the rest of the first ha£f. Charlotte hit on 17 of 29 field goal attempts in the opening twenty minutes for a strong 58.6% and a 48-41 lead. Greensboro returned to the court inspired after intermission and scored six quick points to pull within a single point of the boys in veridian and white. Greens boro, led by Cole and Edwards, fought a see-saw battle with Char lotte, led by Cress and Anthony, for the ne>d sixteen minutes of the game. A free throw by Cress and a field goal by Lemmond, who had an off-night, put the 49ers out ahead for keeps at 83-80. Greensboro was called on a tech nical foul for too many time-outs, and Carter hit the tree throw. Cress also dropped in a foul shot, followed by a field goal by Greens boro’s Loftis, to make the score 85-82. Big Bob Lemmond put the game on ice with a pair of free throws with :24 showing on the clock. Cole’s game-ending two- pointer was only incidental, as the final score read Charlotte - 87, Greensboro - 84. Charlotte slipped to a 40.5% field accuracy in the second half, but still finished with a respec table 49.2% overall. The 49ers also enjoyed their most accurate night from the charity stripe, hit ting 23 for 28 (82.1%), despite cries of, “Miss it sweet thing!” from the Greensboro fans. The 49ers were hurt by tum-oversand lack of reboundingthe entire game. They also gave Greensboro thirty- six opportunities from the free throw line, but were always able to hit the big ones whenthey really counted. Gary Cress led Char lotte with 26 points, followed by Jerry Anthony with 15, Bob Lem mond with 14, and Ben Basinger with 10. Reid Carter, making his first start for the 49ers, played an inspired floor game, chipping in eight points (6-6 from the line) and making sevenvaluableassists. Cole (21), Edwards (18), Emerson (15), and Loftis (14) did most of the scoring fortheSpartans.
