Notes From The Sidelines By John Lafferty Basketball: Mid-Season Somewhere, around four games ago, the 49ers crossed that magic threshold, mid-season. It is times such as these that coaches, players and fans pause to reflect upon the past, and contemplate the future. This season did truly begin upon a dismal note as the 49ers fell before a Guilford onslaught, 125-51. The results were not totally unexpected. Guilford has returned 8 men, and added three promising newcomers to a team which finished 13th nationally in the NAIA. Coach Murphy had predicted that his young and scrappy club were unpredictable, and untried. There was still the DLAC opener with Wesleyan to look forward to. ‘Wait And See...’ The 49ers lost to Wesleyan, and than a host of other opponents before pick^ up Its first victory against UNC-G. Can it then be that the 49ers are not putting forth the effort to win or as suggested by someone who knows, but wishes to remain unknown, that they go into games feeling incapable of winning There are many ways one can analyze the hapless 49ers. But I suppose the team’s problems come from the shoes they wear. Everybody knows good guys were white, and when they take the court in black, it seals their fate. For the remainder of the season, I suppose we must wait. I hope we will see. SPOTLIGHTING. . . About the team, Pete says, “If we ever get to working together, we’ll be heU. We worked together at Greensboro, and also at Lynchburg.’’ Pete is an inspiration to his team mates, even in the face of defeat. For this reason we spotlight him.
