Notes From
The Sidelines

Basketball: Mid-Season
Somewhere, around four games ago, the 49ers crossed that magic
threshold, mid-season. It is times such as these that coaches, players
and fans pause to reflect upon the past, and contemplate the future.
This season did truly begin upon a dismal note as the 49ers fell
before a Guilford onslaught, 125-51. The results were not totally
unexpected. Guilford has returned 8 men, and added three promising
newcomers to a team which finished 13th nationally in the NAIA.
Coach Murphy had predicted that his young and scrappy club were
unpredictable, and untried. There was still the DLAC opener with
Wesleyan to look forward to.

‘It Depends On The Effort..
Can it then be that the 49ers are not putting forth the effort to win
or as suggested by someone who knows, but wishes to remain
unknown, that they go into games feeling incapable of winning
There are many ways one can analyze the hapless 49ers.
But I suppose the team’s problems come from the shoes they
wear. Everybody knows good guys were white, and when they
take the court in black, it seals their fate.
For the remainder of the season, I suppose we must wait. I
hope we will see.

Pete Donahue
Pete Donahue, a sophomore who transferred from Central Pied
mont, and is majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
Pete is one of the “six starters’’ which Coach Muiphy picks
for his team. As such he has been a floor leader, and a perpetually
hustling ballplayer. Both spectators and fellow players gave credit
to Pete for sparking the 49ers in their second victory over UNC-G,
on January 3, 1968.
Born in ^uth Bridge, Mass., he has lived in Charlotte tor 15
years. Pete played one year of JV ball at East High, and one year
in the US Coast Guard, of which he is a veteran.
His major sport has always been swimming. At East he swam
the 400 and 200 yd. free style, and while in the Coast Guard he was
on the diving team.
About the team, Pete says, “If we ever get to working together,
we’ll be heU. We worked together at Greensboro, and also at
Lynchburg.’’
Pete is an inspiration to his team mates, even in the face of
defeat. For this reason we spotlight him.
