History Club Finally
To Be Organized
By RON ROSTER
Sometime early last semester,
several history professors ex-
presed a desire to see a his
tory Club formed on this campus.
Last week this desire became a
reality.
Meeting for the first time a
group of interested students headed
by Mike Carmichael met to set
down some organizational guide
lines for the newly formed club.
Due to a meeting of the faculty
concerning parking tees at the
same time it was impossible for
any of the history professors to
be present.
However, Dr. R. W. Rieke,
chairman of the History Dept,
sent this word of encouragement
to the meeting:
“I am very sorry that I cannot
be there this morning. It I were
there I would be giving you a
warm welcome and an enthusiastic
encouragement tor your plans to
organize a History Club.”
Elected at this meeting were
Mike Carmichael, as president;
and Sandra Hoover as Secretary.
Sue Garrett was appointed as
chairman of the Constitution Com
mittee.
Carmichael said that it was
his impression that the History
Club would provide an organiza
tion for students Interested in
history to discuss their views
and also to provide an organiza
tion to sponsorfunction of a social
nature with historic overtone.
He was also quick to point out
that “the History Club was in no
way in competition with other clubs
and further, that it is distinctly
and markley different than any
other club on campus.”
Carmichael also welcomes all
members of other clubs with his
toric interest to participate in
the newly formed club.
He also said that, “since we
do not have an advisor at this
time, we welcome the advice of
any member of the History De
partment.”
The long-range goals of the
History Club include:
1. To increase the awareness
of the individual member as to
the significance of History as al
field of study.
2. To bring bigger and better
speakers to the Charlotte area,
the National Honorary History Fra-
the National Honorary History
Fraternity, Phi Alpha Theta.
4. To publish a campus maga
zine with a historical emjAasis.
club membership is not restric
ted only to History majors; any
one with a definited interest in
History is welcome to join.
The club will again meet today
in U-233. All interested parties
are invited to attend.
