The Carolina Journal Wednesday, February 14, 1968 Page 5 49’ers Win Two As Season Ends Lynchburg And Methodist Victims By RODNEY SMITH Playing at Harrisburg and Garinger, the UNC-C 49’ers blas ted out two D.I.A.C. wins last week against Methodist and Lynch- butg, two of the three teams that may meet the 49’ers in the tourna ment. The team nearly blew the Metho dist Maroons out of the gym last Wednesday night by a score of 96-77. The score does not indi cate the ease with which Coach Murphy’s well-conditioned squad defeated Methodist. The 49’ers jumped out to an early lead and built it up to 42-30 at halftime. Jerry Anthony scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. The Maroons closed the gap after the game was out of reach and outscored Charlotte 47-44 in the second half. Robbie Snipes gunned in 12 of his 16 points in that half. With Anthony, Basin ger, Donahue, and Lemmond all rebounding in double figures, the home boys out rebounded Metho dist by a margin of 62-34. The team went to the boards both of fensively and defensively and out- hustled Methodist on the floor, an aggressiveness not displayed earlier in the season. Pete earlier in the season. The shooting of Ben Basinger (16 points), and the rebounding of Basinger and Bob Lemmond , (11 rebounds), kept the 49ers in the game the first half, after losing an early lead. Basinger picked up three quick fouls and had to leave the game early in ! the first half. The shooting of I Dean Oldham and smooth ball hand- I ling of Stan Morgan paced the t Hornets to a 40-point first half. Oldham scored 19 points in the first half and G. C. hit 40% from the floor. I Trailing 40-36, despite a first I half shooting performance of 50%, ‘ the 49ers came back on the floor with a new life and determination. Jerry Anthony played his usual outstanding floor game and chalked up nine assists. The following night the surging 49’ers toppled Lynchburg by a score of 70-63-finally, after a dry spell that goes back over two years. Both teams had a bad first half as Charlotte took an early lead and vras never headed. Charlotte was endangered only once during the game, near the end of the first half when Doug McKinney tied the score at 18 all the spirited 49’er went on to take a 22-18 half-time lead as the two teams ripped the nets for 17-61 and 27.8% from the floor. The 49’ers fired in 62.5% in the second half. Led by Donahue’s 12 rebounds, Charlotte out-hust led Lynchburg on the boards, 50-35, while the tans, all 150 of them, were kept on the edge of their seats by Anthony’s many assists to Donahue and Cress. Bob Lem mond led the 49’er scorers with 19 points as Donahue added 18 and Snipes came off the bench tor 10. One of the most exciting points of the game was Anthony’s lost contact lens, which was easily recovered by the sharp-eyed 49’ers. North Carolina Wesleyan. Playing for the fourth consecu tive night and with a lot of riding time under their belts, the 49’ers lost to the superior rebounding of a fired up Wesleyan team after holding a first half lead. The 49’ers out-rebounded 52-38, des pite Bob Lemmond’s 13 rebound performance. Both teams hit 40% of their first half field goal attempts and Rob bie Snipes and Basinger picked up three fouls apiece. In the second half, Wesleyan hit 47% and Char lotte, 44% and Coach Murphy’s squad was outscored by 44-39 in the fatal half. Jerry Anthony and Bob Lemmond paced the Char lotte attack with 20 and 15 points respectively. Home (20), Sutton (19), and Felts (18) paced Wes leyan with some torrid shooting in the second half. Tlie 49’ers next game will be Thursday at St. Basketboll Report As of February 4, Greensboro College led the Dixie Conference, with a 9-1 record. They were fol lowed by: Lynchburg (7-2), St. Andrews (6-3), Methodist (6-4), Wesleyan (3-6), UNC-C (1-7), and College of Charleston (1-10). DIAC scoring is lead by Jim Darden of Methodist, averaging 18.4. UNC-C is represented by Jerry Anthony in third position, with a 15.2 average, and Bob Lem mond tied for tenth, and averag ing 12.8 Andrews in the opening round of the D.I.A.C. Tournament. The 49ers roared back, but were not able to surmount the Hornet lead. Both teams hit 50% from the floor but the game was won from the charity stripe.
