Following debate, the Board voted unanimously in favor of a motion presented by Dr. Julian Mason which reiterated the Board’s policy of non-interference in editorial decisions unless libel or extremely bad taste was in volved. At the March 11 legislature meeting, Sue Garrett, the senior representative who presented the motion from the seniors, referred to the action asked for in the motion as a “last resort.’’ Several meetings were held last week in which many questions concerning the action of the legis lature have been discussed. At a final meeting of the rep resentatives of each class ap pointed by the legislature. Dean of Students Donald MacKay, and Vice Chancellor Bonnie Cone, a compromise to the situation was reached. Administration over-rules the action of the student legislature and declared that the legislature had no right to revoke funds al ready allocated to the annual. The compromise calls for a group of students not on the annual staff to re-edit the contro- versiai class section in keeping with the presently designated total number of pages and leaving all pictures the same size. The legis lature will pay the extra $32 the change of plans will cost. According to Miss Kimbrell, the final publication forthe Rogues ’n Rascals will be late one day for every day this re-arrangement re quires. The book may be as much as two weeks late already when last week’s delay is taken into account. In other business, chairman of the finance committee Larry L. Gamer reported that his com mittee had considered the $1250 additional budget request of the Union. Due to a rise in enroll ment for spring semester above what had been anticipated, the committee now has $3900 more to allocate. Gamer reported that the com mittee had cut the amount to appear in the motion he presented to the legislature to %500. After defeating motions of the original $1250 and a compromise of $750 which came from the floor, the matter was referred back to the committee stage. Another item of business was the acceptance of Bob Alexander as Student Court Judge Ln re placement of Bud Stokely, who has resigned. Carolina Laws Now Available In Library The text of laws which govern some 5,000,000 residents of the Tar Heel state have recently become available in the Atkins Library. These laws appear in the General Statutes of North Caro line, a twelve volume set recently acquired by the Library. Ten of the volumes contain the general laws (with annotations) as enacted through the 1963 ses sion of the General Assembly. Legislation enacted in the 1967 session appears in the 1967 Session Laws. The twelve volumes, including a two-volume index, are arranged chronologically by chapter. Each chapter contains laws relating to a particular subject field such as insurance, roads and highways, elections, and higher education. Altogether the General Statutes contain 167 chapters. An appendix to the General Statutes contains the North Carolina Constitution, rules of practice in the state supreme court and superior courts, rules governing admission to the practice of law, and rules, organization, and canons of ethics of the North Carolina State Bar. Mr. McCorkle pointed out that the 562-vote turnout, 30.8% of eligible voters, was “an excellent turn-out, nearly 15% better than on the other three campuses of the University. Still, he continued, there is much room for improve ment. He also urged students to bring their student identification cards with them to the polls.
