Former Student Here Comments On
Peace Corps Experiences In Brazil
A 1966 graduate of this Uni
versity, Louis Barber, who joined
the Peace Corps three months
after graduation, says that the
Peace Corps “really needs more
money’’, and that it succeeds in
putting “more awareness in
people.’’
“At least these people get to
see partially how another culture
is run,” the twenty-three year-
old former 49’er said.
“I also feel that the Peace
Corps probably helps relations be
tween the countries in which it is
established and the United States,”
he commented.
Mr. Barber, who is assigned
to Santa Cruz, Brazil (a city of
approximately 1,000) has worked
with the Peace Corps tor one
year and three months. He will
spend some eight months more in
Santa Cruz.
When asked how effective is the
Peace Corps, Mr. Barber replied,
“I believe Uiat the Peace Corps
volunteer can do more helping the
people by working in agricultural
cooperatives.”
In Santa Cruz, the dedicated vol
unteer spends a portion of his
time visiting in the homes of
the small landowners and explain

Annual Picture Controversy
BY ELLISON CLARY
“Rogues ’n Rascals” editor
Candy Kimbrell has decided to
group students separately by
classes rather than all together
without regard to class standing
as she had previously planned.
She made her decision last Fri
day at a meeting of eight student
leaders plus yearbook faculty ad
visor Miss Pat Harris, Dean of
Students Donald MacKay, and J.B.
Edwards, a representative of the
annual’s publishing company.
The meeting came about as a
result of Senior Class members’
efforts to persuade Kimbrell to
alter her plans in regard to the
euinual’s class section. The Stu
dent Legislature voted Monday,
March 11, to withhold annual funds
until Seniors and Kimbrell could
come to some agreement.

the penalties and costs involved
in returning the yearbook classes
section to the university for re
working. The section had been sub
mitted to the printer Saturday,
March 9, in compliance with a
deadline.
Edwards said the penalty for
a late section is one dollar per
page for the 32-page classes sec
tion.
Further, he explained that if
the rearrangement of class pic
tures necessitates the addition
of four extra pages, a $76.40

to them.
“The thing we would like to
do most,” he explains, “is to try
to develop the lower class com
munities—to upgrade their stan
dard of Uving both economically
and culturally.
Mr. Barber agreed that there
was much anti-American activity
—especially in the big cities. Par
tially, this resentment of American
springs from the fact that
Brazilians are not allowed to buy
into large companies (such as the
big refining companies).
“I think the best policy would
be that Brazilians demand that
their countrymen be allowed to
buy stock in these comianies,”
Mr. Barber said. “For example,
Willis Jeep allows native owner
ship of stock, and no resentment
has been incurred.”
Mr. Barber described the Peace
Corps experience as frustrating
and rewarding. “It is hard to
see progress because when a
volimteer leaves an area the pro
gram usually falls apart. But when
schools are begun, they are usually
maintained after the volunteer has
left.”
