The Carolina Journal Wednesday, March 27, 1968 Page 5 Harriers Fall To Catawba College By LARRY McAFEE The track team suffered a 106- 39 defeat at the hands of Catawba Friday, March 22. Xhe score does not reflect the individual events. The 49’ers, who ^ere down 50-2 after the field events, came back stronger in tiie run with a 45-37 margin. Also, the times and distances were good for the 49’ers—eight new school records were set. Catawba is the defending Caro- liias Conference Champ. Xhe team was jolted by the strength of the Catawba field event {gam. They dominated all of the field events. Most of their strength game from football players, and {liey outnumbered the 49’ers by four to one. UNC-C definitely suf fered from a lack of depth. Ben Basinger provided the only scoring in the field events. How ever, Dick Long set a school record in the pole vault at 8’6”. The team came on strong in the running events, especially the distance runs. The 49’ers took four first places and four seconds. Marty Fleming took a double victory in the mile run and the three mile run. Marty led the whole distance in both of these. He lapped four of the runners in the three mile. John Lafferty and Jerry Dawson provided strong competition in the 440 yard run. And finished 2nd and 3rd. Larry McAfee held off a strong finish by two Catawba runners to take a first in the 880 yard run. Gary Cress finished in almost a dead heat with two Catawba runners in the 220 yard dash, but he was judged third. The mUe relay finished about 60 yards ahead of Catawba’s. Each run ner increased the lead, and the team finished with a time of 3:34.0 which is just three-tenths of a second off the school record. Dr. Diamant frequently referred to him and his work. When most people hear the term “Freudian” they think of two things, something dealing with the unconscious, or considering something from a psy chological and sexual point of view. However, Dr. Diamant stated that “New theories place emfiiasis on sex on a different level from Freud.” At about the age of four the child notices genital differences between the sexes and then “all roads lead to heterosexual geni tal sex,” he pointed out. At this same time the Oedipus complex begins, with love wishes for the opposite parent and death wishes for the parent of the same sex, he said. Dr. Diamant pointed out an in teresting difference in the mores of Victorian and ourselves; where as Victorians sought “to tall into love without falling into sex,” we modems want “to fall into sex without falling into love.” There is now, however more affection present in sex than in “the good old days.” This affects the pros titutes—“Their trade has been cut into”—because they don’t give affection, he commented. Dr. Diamant also pointed out a relationship between promiscuity, permissiveness, and mental health in a study of co-eds at the Uni versity of Wisconsin. Eighty-six per cent of the co-eds visiting psychologists engage in promis cuity whereas only 20% of those who don’t visit psychologists en gage in promiscuity. However, on this campus in a study of 120 students, no correlation has been shown between promiscuity and mental health Sports Car Club On Move^ Speed Gymkhana Planned By JOHN LAFFERTY The 49er Sports Car Club, for med on this campus last fall under the leadership of Stewart Auten, I is reviving itself as the warm weather aH>roaches.
