The Carolina Journal, Wednesday, April 3, 1968 Page 5 By: LARRY McAFEE St. Andrews Conquers 49’ers 74 - 71 The track team had its first ly,nie meet spoiled by a 74 - 71 loss to St. Andrews. St. Andrews l,ad a 37 - 26 advantage after the field events but many fans cheered the runners on as they attempted to erase the 11 point deficit. The comeback feU ttree points short however, as the team „on the running events 45 - 37. The 49ers won 9 of the 17 events, but finished second in only 6 of them. It was a very disappointing loss, hut the team is confident that they can avenge the loss this Friday against St. Andrews and Campbell at Laurinburg. Marty Fleming turned in an out standing performance to win the uiile and three,mile runs, as he fan away from the rest of the field in both events. He won the mile by almost half a lap, and the three miles by over a full- lap. Once again, John Lafferty and Jerry Dawson finished second and third in the quarter. Gary Cress finished strong in the sprints with two second places. Harold Cohen held off strong com petition to finish first in the High Hurdles. The field looked much better against St. Andrews than a week earlier against Catawba where they scored tour firsts and finished 1-2-3 in the triple jump. Char lotte’s new pole vaulter, David Corey, cleared 11 feet to win that event. Ben Basinger, UNC-c’s utility man, placed in four of seven events and compiled 12 points lor his effort.
