St. Andrews Conquers 49’ers 74 - 71
The track team had its first
ly,nie meet spoiled by a 74 - 71
loss to St. Andrews. St. Andrews
l,ad a 37 - 26 advantage after
the field events but many fans
cheered the runners on as they
attempted to erase the 11 point
deficit. The comeback feU ttree
points short however, as the team
„on the running events 45 - 37.
The 49ers won 9 of the 17
events, but finished second in only
6 of them.
It was a very disappointing loss,
hut the team is confident that they
can avenge the loss this Friday
against St. Andrews and Campbell
at Laurinburg.
Marty Fleming turned in an out
standing performance to win the
uiile and three, mile runs, as he
fan away from the rest of the
field in both events. He won the
mile by almost half a lap, and
the three miles by over a full-
lap. Once again, John Lafferty
and Jerry Dawson finished second
and third in the quarter. Gary
Cress finished strong in the
sprints with two second places.
Harold Cohen held off strong com
petition to finish first in the High
Hurdles.
The field looked much better
against St. Andrews than a week
earlier against Catawba where they
scored tour firsts and finished
1-2-3 in the triple jump. Char
lotte’s new pole vaulter, David
Corey, cleared 11 feet to win
that event. Ben Basinger, UNC-c’s
utility man, placed in four of
seven events and compiled
12 points lor his effort.
