Institute Of International Education Opens Competition For Grants Abroad To B.A. Holders On May 1st, the Institute of In ternational Education will offi cially open its competition for 1969-70 United States Government and foreign graduate grants for academic study or research abroad, and forprofessionaltrain ing in the creative and performing arts. HE annually conductes competi tions for U. S. Government scholarships provided under the Fulbright-Hays Act as part of the educational and cultural exchange program of the U. S. Department of State, and for grants provided by various foreign governments, universities and private donors. Under these programs, more than 950 American graduate students will have an opportunity to study in any one of 50 countries. The purpose of the grants is to in crease mutual understanding be tween the people of the U. S. and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills. Candidates who wish to apply for an award must be U.S. citi zens at the time of application, have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent before the beginning date of the grant and, in most cases, be proficient in the lan guage of the host country. Selec tions will be made on the basis of academic and/or professional record, the feasibility of the ap plicant’s proposed study plan, lan guage preparation and personal qualifications. For U. S. Government grants, preference is given to candidates who have not had prior opportunity for extended study or residence abitad, with the exception ofthose who have served in the armed forces. For foreign grants, appli cants who have had extensive pre vious foreign experience are at a disadvantage but are not dis qualified for this reason. For all grants, preference is given to applicants between the ages of 20 and 35. Creative and performing artists will not be required to have a bachelor’s degree but they must have four years of professional study or equivalent experience. Applicants in the field of medicine must have an M.D. at the time of application. Two types of grants will be available through IlE under the Fulbright-Hayes Act: U.S. Govern ment Full Grants, and U. S. Government Travel Grants. A full award will provide a grantee with tuition, maintenance for one academic year in one country, roud-trip transportation, health and accident insurance and an incidental allowance. The foreign grants are avail able for Austria, France, Ger many, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey and Yugoslavia.
