University Landmark May
Get New Site In Future
By WAYNE EASON
(Journal Staff VVriter)
The traditional University
landmark that all students, past
and present at Charlotte know
all too well, the bell, may be
in for a new site ifpresenttrends
in the architectural plans con
tinue, according to Chancellor
D. W. Colvard. The suggestion
for the new site is the mall that
will eventually be built behind
the present University Union.
The forthcoming gymnasium will
be located at the far end of
this mall. The bell, after due
considerations, will be placed
within this mall since it will
be the future focal point of stu
dent activity.
The idea of placing this age
less landmark of tradition and
heritage was presented to Chan
cellor Colvard last Wednesday
in a letter anda consequent meet
ing on Thursday with its origi
nators, Mr. John Gaither, past
President of the student body,
Mr. Bill Billups, present SGA
president, Mr. Rod Smith, Caro
lina Journal Editor, Mr. Wayne
Eason, Attorney General, and
Mr. Mike Combs, student judge.
Mr. Bud Stewart, Barnstormer
Editor, could not attend the meet
ing but did aid in the formula
tion of the suggestion.
These members and associa
tes of environmentally majestic
festivities committee do feel that
the placing of this timeless sym
bol will greater join together the
unity and spirit that will make
this campus grow and become
one of the best in the state.
